In faraway desert villages and city slums, U.S. military men and women are healing children, digging water wells and building schools. It’s part of a unique approach by a Navy-led task force to fight terrorism in a region where Islamic extremists are trying to gain a foothold.

The mission is unorthodox: Prevent the spread of terrorism by bringing humanitarian aid to Africa. The outcome is uncertain, but U.S. military officials say their work already is proving effective.
