Bill covers military and state topics for The Pilot.
A journalist since 1972, he joined the Norfolk newspapers in 1982 as a copy editor at the afternoon Ledger-Star. He has also held reporting jobs at newspapers in Roanoke and Newport News and has been a weekly newspaper editor and publisher.
Since 1999, he has specialized in in-depth and investigative reporting. He has had periodic assignments as a writer and editor in The Pilot’s Richmond bureau.
A graduate of the College of William and Mary, he has won more than 25 journalism awards from the Virginia Press Association and received The Pilot’s Slover Award for news writing in 2000 and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting in 2007.
