Dan Duke works with reporters to help them develop and focus story ideas and to help them to think about photographs and charts to accompany their stories. Another important responsibility is thinking up story ideas. He edits stories for content, writing quality, grammar and style.
As an assistant section editor, Dan also talk regularly each day with editors and reporters from other sections of the paper to coordinate coverage, as well as graphic artists, photographers, designers and copy editors.
Dan started at The Pilot in October 1994 as a copy editor, and became copy desk chief about a year later. He was assistant business editor for about seven years before moving to the Features Department.
Before joining The Pilot, he was a reporter in central Pennsylvania for the Clearfield Progress, a reporter and editor for the Washington (Pa.) Observer-Reporter, and a copy editor and copy desk chief for The Beaver County Times. The latter two papers are near Pittsburgh, my hometown.
He attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for a year and transferred to West Virginia University in Morgantown, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree as a journalism major.
