Debbie Messina is a general assignment writer on the Norfolk city staff. Her responsibilities include downtown issues, the airport, light rail, libraries, historic preservation, the Virginia Zoo and other Norfolk tourist attractions.

A graduate of the University of Maryland’s College of Journalism, she has worked as a reporter for The Pilot since 1981.

Debbie has covered a variety of beats including transportation, environment, business, city government, education, social issues, courts and crime. Prior to coming to Virginia, she was a reporting intern for the Associated Press covering the Maryland legislature.
