Deirdre Fernandes covers Virginia Beach city government.

Prior to coming to The Pilot in 2003, she worked for papers in Kinston and Winston-Salem, N.C. She has covered education, courts, agriculture and city government.

She graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She has won awards from both the North Carolina Press Association and the Virginia Press Association for profile and general news writing.
