Hattie Brown Garrow is a staff writer for The Beacon, The Virginian-Pilot’s community news section for Virginia Beach readers, and a Saturday general assignment reporter for The Pilot.

Hattie came to The Pilot in July 2005. Before then, she spent two years at The Roanoke Times as an education and community news reporter for Neighbors, a five-zone, weekly tab, and then as night police reporter.

Born and raised in Chesapeake, Hattie wrote for The Pilot’s teen page while in high school. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English in 2003.

Hattie lives in Suffolk with her husband, Shawn, and Labrador retriever, Gus.
