Lee Tolliver is the outdoors writer for The Virginian-Pilot. He also helps out with high school sports coverage, but on a much lesser basis than in years past. He no longer is responsible for field hockey or gymnastics - two sports he covered for 32 years. Where high school sports now is concerned, Lee's main responsibility is with football.

Lee started with The Virginian-Pilot in 1976, just a few months after graduating from Kellam High School in Virginia Beach. He wrote for The Beacon as a high school correspondent during his senior year of high school. A former sports editor for The Beacon, Lee attended ODU for two years, studying English and meteorology. While at The Beacon, he was twice named the Writer of the Year by the National Softball Writer’s Association.

An avid angler and part-time hunter, Lee lived in Virginia Beach for 46 years. He now makes northeast North Carolina his home - where he has become an enthusiastic veggie gardner.

His wife, Ellen, is vice president at a Norfolk-based community bank. The couple likes to travel to the Caribbean and have no children. They have one dog, Dunkin, a cairn terrier.
