Mal has been entertainment editor, arts critic, columnist and critic-at-large for The Virginian-Pilot for more than four decades. For more than 15 years, he was editor of The Pilot’s Sunday Entertainment section which, in a readership survey, ranked second only to local news. He has reviewed classical music, ballet and theater during the formative years of the Virginia Stage Company, Virginia Opera, Virginia Symphony and Virginia Ballet.
Mal helped prompt the organization of the Virginia Film Commission and his biographical article on actress Ava Gardner was published by the National Board of Review in New York. His personality profiles of celebrities have been published, via syndication, in newspapers ranging from the Chicago Sun-Times to the New York Post and Toronto Star. His writings have been translated into Spanish for the Spanish language wing of the Knight-Ridder Syndicate.
Mal's personal and up-close profiles have included meetings with everyone from Laurence Olivier to Mae West, Elizabeth Taylor, Meryl Streep. Brad Pitt, Mick Jagger, Hilary Duff, Bob Hope, Ice Cube, Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, Julia Roberts and Jamie Foxx.
Mal is a UNC-Chapel Hill alum, and he has a Scottish terrier named Duncan who helps him review doggie and animal movies including “Chicken Run” and “Because of Winn-Dixie.”
