Malcolm Venable writes about music and pop culture.

He was previously a freelance feature writer in New York, writing about music, books, fashion and trends for publications including Vibe, Time Out New York, Interview and the Source. He also contributed a number of articles to The Virginian-Pilot as a freelancer before joining the Pilot full time in June.

Malcolm began writing in high school; ironically, when he completed an Urban Journalism Workshop for high school students (where the Dow Jones recognized him as an Outstanding Writer at 17) his writing coach was business writer Battinto Batts. Malcolm went on to study journalism at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he edited the school newsmagazine in his junior year and interned at the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Sports Illustrated for Kids in New York.

After college, Malcolm worked as a general assignment reporter for Landmark subsidiary richmond.com. Shortly after, he left Virginia to earn his master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
