Matthew Jones is a reporter on the Military Team.

Matthew has been at The Pilot since 1999, starting as a weekend metro reporter and copy editor on the paper's night desk before moving on to cover police, fire and rescue for several years in Virginia Beach. Before coming to The Pilot, Matthew worked locally as a writer for Portfolio Weekly magazine and as a stringer for the Associated Press.

Matthew got his start in newspapers in Brazil, working as an editor and reporter for an English-language newspaper and as an editor and translator for the Internet division of a large financial news network.

Before newspapers, Matthew worked as a documentary film editor in Washington and New York, an editor at an agricultural publishing house in Lexington, Va., and a high school English teacher in Eastern Europe.
