Matthew G. Roy covers public safety issues for the Norfolk city staff.

He’s a former wilderness counselor who once led troubled teenagers on canoeing and backpacking trips.

He has worked as a full-time reporter since 1990, which is when he wrote about legal matters, cattle rustling and lost hikers in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Those stories landed him his dream job in Schenectady, N.Y., where he covered crime and government for several years at The Daily Gazette.

He lugged his canoe to Virginia in 2001, when he came to work for The Pilot, and hasn’t paddled it here yet. He doesn’t know what became of his backpack.

His work has been recognized for depth reporting, breaking news coverage, feature writing and public service.
