Tom Holden grew up in Bexley, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University, graduating in 1979 from the School of Journalism.

He worked as a reporter for newspapers in Ohio and a weekly in Illinois before joining The Virginian-Pilot in 1986 as the Virginia Beach police reporter. He later covered medicine and then worked as a general assignment reporter before becoming the day metro editor and then the Virginia Beach city editor.

He returned to reporting in 2003 and now covers transportation.

He lives in Virginia Beach with his wife and three children.
