Tony Germanotta is assistant city editor in Virginia Beach. He also writes the weekly "Whatever Happened To ..." column in the Hampton Roads section of the newspaper.
Tony, a native of Philadelphia, joined the staff of The Ledger Star in February 1980 as a general assignment reporter in the Portsmouth bureau. He has covered a variety of major stories for the newspaper, including the Walker family spy ring, the largest escape from an American death row and the explosion on the Battleship Iowa during a routine gunnery exercise off Puerto Rico. He became an editor in 1994, leading the team of reporters who covered government throughout Hampton Roads and in Richmond. He later oversaw the newspaper’s military team then returned to writing. He is married and has a son in college.
