Trumpeter's tribute to vets saves a life

When Michael Cheeks was playing the trumpet in Cradock High's marching band during the late 1970s, he never imagined his talent would one day save someone's life. Cheeks, 47, a retired Marine master sergeant now living in New Orleans, had not played trumpet for years but had taken a few refresher lessons in May.

Juried exhibition offers something for everyone

By Shirley Brinkley A striking landscape in shades of black, gray and white captured top honors at the Suffolk Art League's 2008 annual Juried Exhibition, which recently opened at the Suffolk Museum. Accomplished artist Cynthia Rector-Jones created the scene with sumi-e ink, which she purchases from Japan.
