Dragas Companies gives $1.5M to help homeless

Posted to: Business

VIRGINIA BEACH

A developer has donated $1.5 million to help address homelessness in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake.

The Dragas Companies of Virginia Beach is contributing $500,000 each to the three cities to help "provide a more cohesive and regional approach to addressing and solving the myriad problems the area's homeless families face," according to a company news release.

Helen Dragas, the company's president and chief executive officer, said in a written statement that she hopes the money will "provide housing stability for school age children, thereby greatly improving their chances of success in school."

"By directing the funding to the housing needs of families with children, we aspire to make an impact on the quality of a child's educational experience," she said.

The Dragas Companies specializes in residential, for-sale condominiums and has supported the construction of more affordable housing in South Hampton Roads.

Thank you Dragas

For voluntarily supporting the community that you live and work in when so many others who are capable don't.
Especially on such an unpopular subject
Let’s not forget that a large number of the homeless are children, veterans and the mentally ill....
Some states require that builders and developers pay and build a school before they start a development. You were not required but contributed anyway…. Thank You

What a joke

"The Dragas Companies specializes in residential, for-sale condominiums and has supported the construction of more affordable housing in South Hampton Roads." You must be kidding. Do you know what local builders consider "affordable" housing in this area? $300k.... Have any idea what percentage of local residents are in a position to buy such a house? Affordable housing my you know what...
