Redskins 22, Giants 10
Play of the game: DE Demetric Evans knocked down Eli Manning’s fourth-down pass at the Redskins 20 with 5:22 to play. A New York touchdown there would have brought the Giants to within 5 points with plenty of time still to play against a Washington offense that had sputtered to a stop.
Winner’s player of the game: Running back Clinton Portis rushed for 126 yards, scored a touchdown, and was instrumental in Washington’s other TD drive. Portis paced a revitalized Redskins rushing attack that chewed up 153 yards and averaged 4.4 yards. Second choice: OT Chris Samuels, who completely stopped Osi Umenyiora.
Loser’s player of the game: RB Brandon Jacobs. He dropped or mishandled a bunch of passes, some thrown much too hard by Eli Manning, but he rushed for 130 yards and caught another 3.
Quote of the day: “We had so many missed opportunities, mistakes, so many things we did wrong, mentally, physically. You can't overcome that and expect to play well. To have so much at stake, win one and we're in the playoffs, then play like that . . . " Giants QB Eli Manning
Quoting coach Joe Gibbs: “it seems that this group of guys, I don’t care what happens, they just seem to say, “We’re going to keep trying and keep staying after it and keep fighting and somehow try to overcome it.”
Quoting Giants coach Tom Coughlin: “I don’t think we played in unison tonight and it’s been a long time since that happened. It’s back to the drawing board for us. There are no simple answers.”
Quick kicks: New York’s David Tyree, a receiver and special-teams standout, missed the game after his mother Thelma died of a heart attack on Saturday night in Florida. . . . The practice bubble used by the Giants outside their stadium in inclement weather collapsed Sunday morning. No one was hurt. . . . Newly signed Sam Hollenbach was Washington’s third quarterback. The Redskins’ inactives were Jason Campbell, WR Anthony Mix, a former Giant, CB John Eubanks, TE Brian Kozlowski, LB Randall Godfrey, G Mike Pucillo and DT Ryan Boschetti.
Injuries: LB Rocky McIntosh left the game with a left knee injury in the first quarter and did not return . . . . Vernon Fox left the game with a knee injury that didn’t appear serious.
Next week: The Redskins play at Minnesota, 8:15 p.m.
Report Card
Redskins 22, Giants 10
Offense _ Todd Collins’ stats look less than mediocre _ 8 of 25 _ but he hit some big passes, didn’t have a turnover, and took some big shots immediately after releasing the ball. Given the howling wind whipping inside Giants Stadium, we’ll give Collins a pass. He won’t have that excuse next week in Minneapolis and the Metrodome.. . . The offensive was sporadic, but put together several impressive drives in which they moved the Giants D line off the ball. Give Chris Samuels a ton of credit for his work on sack specialist Osi Umenyiora, who was neutralized. And give some love to Stephon Heyer, who did nice work on Michael Strahan . . . Clinton Portis was Washington’s star of the game with 126 yards and a touchdown, while Ladell Betts turned in one of game’s key plays with his 14-yard touchdown run on a draw play. . . . Finally, Santana Moss made a couple of acrobatic catches on a night when it was difficult to catch the simple stuff.
Grade: B
Defense _ The Giants certainly helped with 9 drops, but Redskins CBs Fred Smoot and Shawn Springs were outstanding shadowing Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer. They busted up a bunch of plays, made even the balls they caught a tough chore and helped keep a talented NY receiving corps under wraps. . . . Brandon Jacobs ran for 130 yards and several times appeared on the verge of breaking a long one, but the Redskins always managed to put him on the turf and make the Giants earn every yard . . . Andre Carter had a huge sack that caused Eli Manning to fumble, one in a series of those type big plays Carter has turned in. . . . Rookie safety LaRon Landry ought to be fined by the coaches for his mindless 15-yard taunting penalty after leveling Burress to bust up a third-down pass attempt. That mistake greased the skids for a NY field goal.
Grade: C+, the Giants made so many unforced errors, it’s hard to know what real impact the defense had.
Special teams _ Shaun Suisham was one of the heroes with three field goals, including a 49-yarder that he drilled as though hitting a 1-iron under some tree branches. Derrick Frost received a series of fortuitous bounces, but played well considering the circumstances. Antwaan Randle El offered little on punt returns; Rock Cartwright had one sizeable return, but seemed overshadowed by NY counterpart Ahmad Bradshaw.

Skins FA and Draft plans?
Hey Duce!
With McIntosh lost for the 2008 season already, and Rogers of questionable availability, are we looking at a huge defensive draft this year to replace Taylor, Springs, and the DL? Was curious, because early in the season, I was thinking one DL, one CB, one (or two) Big WR, and a young OL were the Redskins offseason priorities; now it looks like it's 2 CBs, 2 LBs, a DL, a Safety, one Big WR, and 2 OL; that's too much to try to draft, and maybe too much to try to get in FA as well....
Skins v Giants & Sportsmanship in the NFL
Pleased to see the Skins gut out a win on a strange day of deceptively troublesome wind. I am disappointed and dismayed by the sorry state of professional athletics generally, and football specifically...pointing as well at major college programs as well.
First-round pick apparently = license to make an obnoxious fool of self. I doubt a fine will get LaRon Landry's attention. He needs a few searing words behind closed doors in Coach Joe's office. A brilliant play, mindlessly stupid, arrogant follow-up.
Question of the day: at what level do we stop emphasizing s-p-o-r-t-s-m-a-n-s-h-i-p? Or are we not starting somewhere while kids assemble to play the game for fun?
This is why I USED TO BE an avid pro football fan...grew up (50's-60's) with the Cleveland Browns, have embraced the Steelers (Franko, Rocky, Terry era), and the Chargers (Navy, 10 years, most with Don Coryel and Dan Fouts and Charle Joyner and Louis Kelcher). Today simply disgusted.
Thanks for "listening."
