Sheriff Robert McCabe has decided not to challenge Thelma Drake in the race for a 2nd Congressional District seat, saying he and his wife did not want to disrupt the lives of their children by moving them to Washington.
McCabe, a former Republican and independent, became a Democrat several years ago. Party leaders recently began courting him to run against Drake, a two-term Republican.
"Ultimately, my family and I did not feel that the timing was right," McCabe said. "My wife and I have teenage boys in the early years of high school. To disrupt their high school years would not be in their best interest."
McCabe also said that he enjoys being sheriff and that he and his more than 500 employees "have accomplished so much together.... In the end, it did not seem right to abandon them."
McCabe, who has been sheriff for 15 years, said he plans to run for re-election in 2009.

Now, if you can just take care of that tricky situation of using 100-year old deputies to transport prisoners around town in the front seats of their units (so they can make their getaways easier), maybe we can all relax a little in Norfolk.
Run Sheriff, Run
The only reason Thelma Drake won the last time was that she was running against an incompetent opponent. Sheriff, won't you please reconsider? We need someone who will hasten our departure from Iraq, and Mrs Drake has shown no inclination to end our einvolvement there.
Smart move
Who in their right mind would want to be associated with the Pelozi lefties?
Vote for Jody Wagner
Secretary of Finance Wagner is an excellent choice to run against the well-oiled machine that is the Drake camp. She's got my vote.
Norfolk Sheriff
Way to go Sheriff! A very smart decision. While being a member of Congress sounds soooo prestigious, it really doesn't seem like it would be. It's more prestigious to be the sheriff of a major local city where, you personally, can effect change to fight crime and help those for whom you serve. In Congress you'd just be a junior voice and anything done doesn't happen immediately. Staying here to continue your fight on crime, family stability, and the support of family, friends, and co-workers will mean immensely more when you look back later in life.
