Baltimore Sun weighs bid for some Landmark properties

Posted to: Business Landmark Communications

The Baltimore Sun Co. is considering bidding on Landmark Communications Inc.'s Maryland newspapers, a Sun executive said Monday.

Landmark, which owns The Virginian-Pilot, announced last week that it might sell all of its assets. In Maryland, they include The Capital in Annapolis, the Carroll County Times and a handful of weeklies in Anne Arundel County.

"This is a marathon, and we're in the first hundred yards," said Tim Thomas, the Sun's vice president of business development. "We're in the process of determining whether or not it makes sense for us to pursue this."

Thomas said he didn't expect The Sun to pursue The Pilot. "The Virginian-Pilot would hold a lot less opportunity for The Baltimore Sun than other properties may in the state of Maryland," Thomas said.
