Chesapeake officials mull calendar options

Posted to: Chesapeake Education News

Chesapeake public school officials introduced three options for the 2008-09 school year calendar Monday night.

Regardless of the calendar chosen, one with 180 or 181 days, the first day of school will be Sept. 2 and spring break will be April 13 -17.

This year, the first day of school was Sept. 4 and spring break will be March 24-28. This school year will be 180 days.

The proposed calendars have different teacher workdays, winter breaks, last days of school and graduation times.

One calendar eliminates Saturday workdays, while the others have two and three. Winter breaks range from eight to 10 days and the last day of school is listed as June 11 on one calendar and June 12 on another.

Graduation dates and the number of schools graduating each day between June 10 and 13 vary with each option.

All three calendars will be posted on the school division Web site by this weekend. Parents, faculty and staff are invited to comment. The school board is expected to vote on the calendar at the end of February.
