A Chesapeake police officer was fatally shot Thursday night as police attempted to serve a narcotics warrant at a home in the 900 block of Redstart Ave., authorities said.
Police sources said two people were in custody late Thursday. It was unclear when they were arrested.
Police spokesman Officer Charles Thiebaud said the officers went to the residence about 8:30 p.m. The shot officer was taken by ambulance with a police escort to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, soon followed by other officers and department officials.
Later, two Police Department sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the officer had died. The officer's identity was not released.
After the shooting, scores of officers and heavily armed SWAT team members descended on the scene.
Officers went door to door, evacuating the residents of several nearby houses and telling other neighborhood residents to stay indoors.
Several blocks around the shooting scene in each direction were closed off with yellow police tape.
Police would not say if they knew whether anybody was still in the house where the warrant was being served or, if so, how many people were there.
Just before 10:30 p.m., police began calling for the surrender of anyone inside the house. An officer on a loudspeaker called out the house number, saying "You need to put your hands up and come out. You need to do it now."
After 11 p.m., police escorted some residents back to their homes but a wide area continued to be closed to the public.
Residents of the Avalon neighborhood were stunned by the violence.
"This is generally a very quiet place," said Zach Blankenship, 25, a yacht carpenter. He said he was in his house a block from the shooting scene and watching a movie when he heard a gunshot.
"It was definitely a gunshot, no doubt about it," Blankenship said. "I really didn't want to believe it."
Even then, Blankenship said, he didn't think anything bad had happened. Only minutes later when he thought there was lightning outside did he look out his window.
"That's when I saw there were plenty of police," he said.
Blankenship said he looked down the street a short time later and saw medical personnel working on someone on the ground.
"They were doing chest compressions," he said. After several minutes he said the victim was placed in an ambulance.
Another resident, Catrina Mitchum, 23, said she also heard what sounded like a single gunshot. It surprised her, she said, because the neighborhood is "always quiet."
Mitchum, a graduate student at Old Dominion University, said she has lived there about nine months, but spoke with a longtime resident.
"They said this is the first time anything like this has happened around here," she said.
The last Chesapeake officer to die in the line of duty was Michael Saffran, 45, on Oct. 8, 2005. Saffran was shot and killed after responding to a bank robbery.
When he arrived on the scene, he spotted a vehicle speeding away and began pursuing it. The vehicle crashed a short distance away at the intersection of U.S.17 and Yadkin Road.
As officers exited their vehicle, they saw a man in the car they'd been chasing pull a female hostage from the car. She soon broke free, however, and the man and the officers then exchanged gunfire.
The man, Officer Saffran and the hostage were all struck by the gunshots. The man died at the scene. Saffran and the woman were taken to a hospital where Saffran later died.

Good Cop
Shivers was a good cop. He was always fair and very nice. I remember when I first started on the force he always had an encouraging word and smile. Good Bye, God bless our Officers in Blue.
R.I.P. Det Jarrod Shivers
Having been a narc and SWAT for 12 years before I retired from the PPD I know first hand the dangers of a drug raid. You can make the best of plans but as you know- "the best laid plans oft go awry." I don't know all the facts but if this was a "No Knock" warrant there was a reason for it. Let's not lose sight of what's important- a family lost a husband and a father, and the Thin Blue Line just got a little thinner. My prayers are with the family of Det. Shivers, his family at his home and at the Chesapeake Police Dept. "Greater love hath no man that this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
I'm not a fan of yours either......... A reply
I'm not a fan of cops either. What happened here is very sad and, considering he was actually serving a narcotics warrant, this police officer was actually doing what police SHOULD be doing, and that's fighting crime. I am always on the right side of the law and I was a victim last year of a cop who just needed to pull someone over and right a ticket. I didn't commit a crime AT ALL. I was driving the speed limit along with a pack of traffic and I was picked out of the crowd and given a speeding ticket. I went to court because I thought I couldn't possibly be found guilty of a crime I didn't commit. Wake up call! I was found guilty and the city of Virginia Beach robbed me that day. Not all cops are good. This officer and his family will, however, be in my thoughts. May he rest in peace.
The Thin Blue Line
Please, let's keep the comments on target.
A Police Officer's Prayer
Lord, I ask for courage --
Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go...
I ask for strength --
Strength of body to protect others,
and strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication --
Dedication to my job, to do it well,
Dedication to my community, to keep it safe...
And please, Lord, through it all, be by my side.
The thin blue line has been stretched thinner again. The blue line represents each of us who daily protect this nation. The black background was designed as a constant reminder of our fallen brother and sister officers.
Let us never forget the sacrifice of this officer and his family.

Officer killed
My deepest sympathy goes out to the police officers family, the Chesapeake police department family as well as the various courts that have worked with this officer. They all suffer this loss as well as the community. He was just doing his job.
Thoughts and Prayers are with the Family!
As a wife of a Chesapeake Police Officer, my thoughts and prayers are with that officer's family and with all other officers who put their lives on the line every single day! I can't imagine what his wife is going through, it's our worst nightmare!!
heck, i dont like cops, either but......
i dont like cops either, because i've run into a lot of racist cops that seem to think if you're not "one of them" then you're the enemy....HOWEVER, any time a life is lost due to senseless violence, its a sad, sad day....just our luck, it was probably one of the good cops....my prayers go out to the officer and any family/friends he had....the old saying goes "the good die young".....he'll be watching over and protecting the community from up above....... R.I.P.
The FAILED war on drugs.
Folks, if we didn't have this costly and crazy war on drugs, this officer would be alive today. Making drugs illegal has created these criminals and made them into lying cheating stealing murdering thugs. The sad reality of it is that people will seek out drugs and others will seek ways of providing those drugs. It's simple supply and demand. If "illegal" drugs were to be decriminalized, regulated and taxed like alcohol, then we would see violent crimes drop instantly because it would completely eliminate the need for drug dealers. It's time to wake up.
Life given in the line of duty
Our prayers and thoughts are with the officer's family, the department and the entire community.
Was this a "No Knock" raid?
Most of these types of incidents have been caused by not knocking first. If it was I suggest that Chesapeake reevaluates its policies so this does not happen again. My prayers are with the family and friends.
Prayers
My prayers go to the officer and family, the Chesapeake Police, and our community.
Thank you for selfless service.
Boys in Blue
Another worthless drug dealer shot& killed Police Officer who was performing his duties. Hopefully State of Virginia pulls out "Old Sparky" for you. May this fallen Officer rest in peace.Hats off to Boys in Blue.
You can't judge why someone is "Not a fan of cops"...
There are a number of reasons the individual may feel this way. You mention DWI, but it could just as easily been "DWB". Perhaps he ended up in a confrontation with one of the "Rogues" that come to light every now and then. One instance could shade an individuals perception for a very long time. If you haven't been there, you cannot give an informed - maybe not even an intelligent- opinion!
In the end the individual did offer his sympathy!!!!
Drug Wars....
It is a Sad day for all of America when an Officer of the law is struck down while serving his community. These Brave men and women are true hero's willing to risk everything to make our community safer. My prayers will be for the Officers Family that they shall find peace somehow in all of this.
It is time to LEGALIZE all illegal drugs and end the War On Drugs. It is time to take back our communities from the DEALERS who have brought this VIOLENT War to our Streets. As long as people's demand for the drugs is there, so to are the drugs. Since the war started with Nixon the availability of Drugs on the Street has been a constant. Nothing has changed except that thousands upon thousands have been killed in the name of The War On Drugs, all for nothing....Peace and Love
I'm not a fan of yours either.
To the "Not a big fan of cops". This statement leads me to believe that you are probably someone that is skating on the edge of the law. Maybe drugs, DUI's, red light runner, speeder, etc. If not for your illegal actions then why else would you make a statement like you started your comment with? I'm not a big fan of dentists, but we need them. If it were a dentist killed would you have started with the same statement? I doubt it. It's people with your attitude that cause police officers to begin to doubt where most citizens are comming from when they are confronted by them. There are pleanty of unbalanced individuals out there that would kill you for your shoes, but you are not a fan of the people that need to find this guy because you want your shoes back. It's people just like you that haven't a clue as to what it means to protect and serve. Thank God that you are still a miniority in the civilized world. May this Officer rest in Peace. May his family be comforted knowing that there are many that are "Fans" of COPS and are feeling their loss along with them.
So Very Sorry..
..for this officer's family and fellow officers and community.
Thank you for serving and protecting our community. May you Rest In Peace and may God Bless You.
Rest in Peace
Thankyou for doing your job every day that you served the citizens of Chesapeake.
Service and Sacrifice
Last year, more than 180 officers were killed in the line of duty. This kind of tragedy strikes a community somewhere in America, on average every other day, though you seldom hear about the officers outside the immediate area. Nobody likes receiving a speeding ticket or being told what they're supposed to do, but just imagine for a moment what life would be like...just one day without them. God Bless the Chesapeake Police Department. Thank you all. Our heroes will live forever.
Fan of the Police
I AM a fan of the police and when I hear about the murder of a policeman it makes my blood boil-remember, two were just ambushed and killed in Duluth GA this past week. To the coward or cowards that committed this terrible crime-why can't you get a job like a real man and become part of the human race. People must speak out and take action to get rid of the human scumbags that have invaded our neighborhood and communities. The police need our help!
Fallen Hero
Our hearts and Prayers go out to our family in Blue for the loss of one of their own. These Men and Women who put their lives on the line upholding the law are true Hero's. I hope they give the Death Penelty to the person or persons responsible for the taking of this officers life .
SO SORRY
I am so sorry for the family that lost their loved one. A police officer has dedicated his life to serve us, he has now even given his life.
May the Lord be with all his friends and family.
South Norfolk is getting worse and worse with gangs and violence. It is just falling apart.
Officer Shot
I'm not a big fan of cops, but it is still a shame to hear of one shot and killed. He was doing his job and if the offender committed a narcotics offense they should be arrestted. Whoever shot the cop will now pay the price for his stupidity. My prayers will be with this family and peace be with them.
OFFICER DOWN
I HATE TO HEAR OF A COP BEING KILLED, THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB TO PROTECT AND SERVE. R I P SIR.
whatever happened to ..
south norfolk???
God bless thiss officer and his family. May he rest in peace. It is such a shame that these coeward's have to shoot and cannot face there action's like a man. Why can't they earn a living like a real man and get a real job, that way in the first place, these officers would not have been over there serving narcotic's warrants. Not only did he lose his life, there were many life that are changed forever with his. I wish these punk's would think about this. They are such coward's.
God Bless the Officer, His
God Bless the Officer, His Family and the Chesapeake Police Deptartment. I salute you.
Prayers
Prayers to the family and friends of the fallen Officer...May he Rest In Peace.
Prayers
Just want to tell the family of the officer that my thoughts and prayers are with them.
You are always a hero to
You are always a hero to your fellow brothers in blue. God bless you and your family
More Prayers
Many thanks and prayers for this officer and the officer's family. These brave men and women do this job and very rarely get thanked. However, their families have to be just as brave. My thoughts, respect, and prayers go out tonight to everyone involved. Pat an officer on the back today, they need our support as much as we need theirs.
It is always a sad day
When someone on the side of law and order dies. My condolences to the family and friends. Know that the officer died doing good, take some small solice in that.
