Chesapeake split on joining group that studies immigration

Posted to: Chesapeake News

The Chesapeake Council on Tuesday night was split on whether to join a city and county Coalition on Illegal Aliens, a group formed in northern Virginia to investigate illegal immigrants' affects on issues like crime and residential overcrowding.

In the end, a measure to join the coalition failed after four council members opposed it.

Councilwoman Patricia Willis, Mayor Dalton Edge, and Councilman Alan Krasnoff supported joining the group. Willis said she was contacted by the town of Herndon, whose mayor is the chairman of the coalition.

Councilmen C.E. "Cliff" Hayes Jr. and Bryan Collins joined Councilwomen Rebecca Adams and Ella Ward in voting against becoming a part of the coalition. Adams said she was not "terribly comfortable" with the coalition.

Who benefits from opposition
