Continental AG in Newport News lays off 51

NEWPORT NEWS

The woes of Detroit’s auto industry are continuing to be felt in Hampton Roads. The latest victims are workers at Continental AG. The company said it has laid off 51 hourly workers – or nearly 12 percent of the hourly work force – from its Newport News production plant.

The manufacturing facility makes fuel-injection systems for such automakers as Ford and Chryslyer. Ford last year shut its truck production plant in Norfolk.

“The reason is just a slowdown in customer orders,” said Jim Gill, spokesman for Continental’s North America headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich. “Car sales have slowed. We had to take action on our end to adjust our production.”

Before the layoffs, which occurred late last week, the plant employed just under 700, including 427 hourly production workers, he said.
