David Wright has added "buy condo in Norfolk" to his offseason to-do list.
The New York Mets all-star third baseman said Wednesday he has a real estate agent scouring downtown for a place to hang his hat a couple of months a year.
"I wanted to spend a little more time in Virginia in the offseason, and I wanted a place where I could jump on I-464 so I could shoot out to Chesapeake without a lot of drive time," said Wright, 25, who starred at Chesapeake's Hickory High and whose family lives in Chesapeake. "I'm definitely going to get something in Norfolk."
Wright plans to hire an interior decorator and expects to move in this fall, following the upcoming season. Younger brother Stephen, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, might share the condo if he lands a local job.
"I like to come home and train with some of the local guys in the offseason, and this just seemed like the right thing to do," Wright said.
He can afford the neighborhood. Wright signed a six-year, $55 million contract
extension with the Mets in 2006.

Yeah who cares.....
I love baseball and I love to watch David Wright play but who cares if he's buying a condo in Norfolk...lol. He's from the area for Christ sake!! I bet it will be really big news if he does a rolling stop at the stop sign in Norfolk because Norfolk Police do not play...lol. Anyway, he should wait and purchase one of those condos in Norfolk that the bank is foreclosing on.... I really love the pilot but if we keep getting articles like this, I'll have second thoughts.
Yeah!
Why would a local star turned face of one of the largest sports franchises in the world get any publicity. It is nice to see that David wants to spend time in the 757, when so many other sports stars loath to hang out where they grew up. Baseball has risen to great heights in this area thanks to guys like the late Towney Townsend helping guys like David, BJ and Justin Upton, and Mike Cuddyer. Baseball continues to get a pick-me-up every time one of these guys volunteers or makes an appearance. Many folks ARE interested in this.
Have Patients
Mr. Wright,
Have a little more patients because Norfolk will soon be building some wonderful "New Condos" in the St. Paul's Quadrant once they drive those poor folks out of Tidewater Gardens. Your condo would be close to the ball park, and as for those poor individuals who are only holding the land until the city gets enough grant funding to demolish the property, well, they will be alright. Their just those poor people.
I hear...
...Granby Tower has some vacancies.
Who cares?
Does anyone really care? I like David Wright and think he is a great rep. of this area, but give me a break and give the guy some privacy. Is it really necessary to write an article about how he is looking to buy a condo in Norfolk? Are we that pathetic of a community that this is big news? What's next? Mike Cuddyer is thinking about buying a car from a local dealership....
