One of South Hampton Roads’ biggest high school football stars is headed to the Big Ten.

Salem running back Kevin Whaley picked Minnesota, committing to the Gophers after receiving dozens of scholarship offers. South Hampton Roads’ career rushing and scoring leader, Whaley recently had narrowed his list of favorites to Connecticut, Michigan State and West Virginia.

Whaley, a 5-foot-11, 175-pounder who also plays defensive back and kick returner, is a two-time Beach District and All-Tidewater Player of the Year.
Including playoff games, he finished with 6,301 career rushing yards.

Whaley rushed for 1,661 yards and scored 25 total touchdowns in 13 games as a senior. He also helped lead the Sun Devils to back-to-back 10-0 regular seasons in the Beach District and to the 2006 Eastern Region Division 6 championship. Salem lost to Oscar Smith in the region final this past season.

At Minnesota, Whaley joins a program that was winless in Big Ten Conference play this past year in coach Tim Brewster’s first season. The Gophers finished 1-11 overall.

Whaley’s commitment leaves only a handful of South Hampton Roads’ top seniors still mulling college choices as the Feb. 6 signing day approaches.

Among the first-team All-Tidewater selections who have yet to commit are Ocean Lakes quarterback Marcus Davis and wide receiver Randall Dunn, Western Branch running back Hykeem Brodie, Lake Taylor running back Jay Jay Simmons and Deep Creek tight end Devin Arrington.
