Ex-President Bush to attend test on carrier named for him

Posted to: Military Newport News

Former President George H.W. Bush will be on hand next week when Northrop Grumman’s Newport News shipyard tests the catapult system on the new aircraft carrier that bear’s Bush’s name, the company said today.

The flattop, the last of the Navy’s Nimitz-class carriers, is scheduled for delivery late this year. Bush, a Navy pilot during World War II, attended the carrier’s christening in 2006.

The catapult system on the carrier is used to launch aircraft off the deck. The testing will occur Jan. 25
