Girls hoops: Princess Anne zips through First Colonial slowdown

Posted to: High Schools Sports

First Colonial’s game plan was evident early in Tuesday night’s Beach District girls basketball showdown against Princess Anne.

“Patience!” shouted Patriots coach Larry Bowman on the first possession.

First Colonial wasn’t patient enough, and Princess Anne ran to another victory.

The top-ranked Cavaliers, using their typical frenetic pace and another stellar game from guard Raven Harris, dashed to a 57-31 victory over No. 7 First Colonial in a match-up of Beach unbeatens.

Harris turned in a second consecutive 28-point performance, terrorizing the Patriots’ zone defense, as Princess Anne improved to 18-0 overall and 6-0 in the Beach. Cox (9-8, 5-0) is the only other district unbeaten.

A zone defense “kind of takes us out of our game because we’re more like a fast-break team,” Harris said. “But I’ll take somebody playing a zone on us any day.”

Harris showed her glee early Tuesday, scoring 17 points before halftime and dropping in a few daggers from beyond the 3-point arc. She buried one during a 9-0 spurt in the final 3:40 of the second quarter to help the Cavaliers take a 25-13 halftime lead.

Then, she struck with another two minutes into the third quarter to put Princess Anne in front 32-13.

“We have a lot of plays out of the zone for me and our other shooters,” said Harris, who finished with four 3-pointers. “My teammates set some really good screens along the baseline to get me a lot of open shots.”

The Patriots (14-3, 4-1), meanwhile, never recovered from a first quarter in which they committed six turnovers on their first seven possessions. First Colonial, which held its first four district opponents to 33 or fewer points, saw its winning streak snapped at eight games.

“We tried to slow the game down to our speed,” Patriots guard Heather Cummings said. “If we would’ve stayed in our offense, kept calling plays and gotten back on defense we would’ve been better off. They beat us down court a lot.”
