Students at Hickory Middle School have declared January as Violence Prevention Month and have planned several activities to promote their "Stop the Violence" theme.
Five members of the school's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Inc. (FCCLA) club are working with faculty sponsor Leona Parker on the event. The goal of the program, part of a national observance by FCCLA, is to encourage students to see prevention as a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence. As part of the activities, students will analyze and evaluate persuasive presentations on how to reduce the potential for youth violence.
More than 200 students in Parker's and Joanne Cotton's Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes will attend assemblies Jan. 15 to 17 to address the topic. Chesapeake Police Officer Kahlil Pacheco will be the guest speaker.
The FCCLA members also have displayed information and inspirational posters throughout Hickory Middle School as well as placed orange and purple ribbons on lockers.
The entire school is collecting clothing and other items this month to be donated to the Samaritan House for homeless and battered women.
