Navy names three more Virginia-class attack subs

Posted to: Business

Three more Virginia-class attack submarines have been named by Navy Secretary Donald Winter, the Navy said today.

They will be: the Missouri SSN-780, the California SSN-781and the Mississippi SSN 782.

The 377-foot nuclear-powered subs, armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles and equipped for stealth missions in coastal waters, are being assembled in a partnership between Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News and General Dynamics’ Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.

So far, the industry team has delivered three: the namesake Virginia, the Texas and the Hawaii. The Newport News yard, which delivered the Texas, expects to deliver the fourth, the North Carolina, in mid-February.

To date, the yards have 10 of the submarines under Navy contract. Under the rotation, Newport News will also be delivering the New Mexico, the California and the as-yet unnamed 10th sub of the class.

Illinois?

Here's hoping the next one gets named for Illinois. There hasn't been a USS Illinois since 1920! There was an Iowa-class battleship with that name planned, but then WWII ended and it never got built.
