ODU defends its policy on undocumented students

CLARIFICATIONS

Virginia Tech doesn't ask student applicants whether they are in the country illegally but does ask all applicants whether they are U.S. citizens or have a residency permit or a visa. The original version of this story reported that Tech asks some students' citizenship status for tuition or academic assistance purposes.

RICHMOND

An informal survey by a state higher education agency indicates that Old Dominion University is one of four of Virginia’s 15 public colleges and universities that will enroll undocumented immigrants.

The survey by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia was requested by Del. Chris Peace, R-Hanover, who has introduced a bill that would make illegal immigrants ineligible for admission to Virginia’s public colleges and universities.

ODU officials said Friday the school’s policy on admitting illegal immigrants is more complicated.

Steven Risch, director of international and graduate admissions, said his school doesn’t knowingly enroll undocumented immigrants. He said he’s not sure what the council survey asked or who provided ODU’s answers.

ODU will accept applications and admit undocumented students under the school’s nondiscrimination policy. But, under an unwritten office policy, it won’t allow them into class – to actually enroll – until they clear up their status.

But because the school doesn’t check the citizenship status of those who say they’re legal, Risch assumes that some illegal immigrant students are on campus.

“We’d have to check it for every application,” he said. “And I’m not aware of any school that does that.”

ODU received more than 22,000 applications in the past year, he said.

The council’s Jan. 16 letter to Peace said Virginia Tech, George Mason University and Radford University also permit illegal immigrants to enroll.

Virginia Tech doesn’t ask students about their citizenship status, other than sometimes for tuition or academic assistance purposes, spokesman Larry Hincker said. Determining their legal status is the responsibility of the U.S. government, he said.

“It’s not like these people are coming in from Chihuahua ,” Hincker said. “They’re graduating from good Virginia schools. They have good grades. … You don’t get into Virginia Tech unless you’re a good student.”

Peace, who asked for the state council survey, said his bill is not about discrimination. “It goes to the philosophical issue of whether we want to continue to provide incentives for people to come here illegally,” he said.

Members of the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations, during a visit to the capitol this week, said they oppose Peace’s bill because it would further prevent otherwise worthy students from going to college.

“My friend came to this country two years ago. I met him at school. He started in low classes,” said Gilmar Alarcon, a 17-year-old high school student who came to Arlington from Bolivia.

Last year, the friend graduated, he said. “ He was taking three AP classes. He wants to go to college, but he couldn’t apply. Now my question is, what is he supposed to do now?”

What part of illegal do you not understand?

They are ILLEGAL! Throw em all out. The ones who came here LEGALLY, I have no problems with. ILLEGALS should have NO rights other than a flight back to their country. What part of ILLEGAL does Richmond or Washington not understand!?

Blame Game

I guess ODU should double as the U.S. boarder patrol? Maybe all it’s 20,000 + students should be required to submit their U.S. passport at the class door on Tuesday? Why not finger print ‘em all too--- and while we’re at it, lets require this treatment of ALL college students in Virginia, AND state employees AND members of the General Assembly. Apparently, some in our state legislature don’t have the guts to focus on real issues, but instead, use an “informal” report to win points with the ever shrinking, xenophobic constituency. And yes, it’s thankfully shrinking – just ask former Senator George Allen.

Read the Article People!!

Are you people idiots? The article states that students are not permitted to enroll if thier visa status is not cleared!!! The issue is clearly how the illegals are entering in the first place, a problem that has to be dealt with and managed by our federal gov't. I guess some of you are suggesting that every U.S. citizen will need to carry a passport to check out a book in the library, get a drivers licence, and drive on I-64! Sure lets just throw out the few civil liberties this free country has remaining. Think about it!

Put Down to Mexicans

The comment in the article saying that not all the illegal students were from Chihuahua was a putdown to Mexicans. This was a very prejudice remark made by a representative of a university. Shame on you!!!

legals being pushed aside for illegals

There are only a certain number of freshmen students accepted each year, therefore if illegals are getting in to ODU it only makes sense that there are deserving legal citizens who are not getting these slots. Maybe we need our own "Iron Curtain" along our southern borders to keep these freeloading parasites out.

Rob Maz....

Instead of complaining about what can't be done, why don't you come up with solutions. Rob Maz the enabler provides the same garbage that alot of latino enablers do. This is not rocket science nor outside of common sense. These taxpayer funded give away programs are the very reason that these people are here. Just cut off the freebies, check everyone for legal status and deport all illegals in droves. It is just too darn simple except for the crowd that claims discrimination. Discrimination against who, criminals?

Okay jg42053

Then using your version of "diverstity", how about we simply pick the locks on your house and allow the illegals to live with you? That would be fair, wouldn't it? I mean afterall, you are insisting that just because these people want to, in your words, "better themselves", it gives them every right to disregard virtually every other law they choose to in order to accomplish that goal, doesn't it?

You simply can't have it both ways-they're here illegally and they have to go back or, they are here illegally and therefore excused from obeying every other law on the books-what's it going to be??

Wow

Quote: "I do not support illegals. ODU's resources are limited and there are plenty of "legal" deserving students waiting for a chance." Consider the following: On the one hand you state you don't support illegals and clearly state that ODU has limited funding. That's fine, but where exactly are they supposed to get the additional funding to do a background check on each student especially considering the fact that the feds and states should be doing that in the first place? Also, aren't the public grade schools (which you are paying a load of taxes to support) that these kids are graduating from before college, supposed to be verified as legal students in the first place? Since when did the job of verification of citizenship fall to ODU if most these same kids are graduating from high schools in the U.S. in the first place? Now that you have cut ODU off from your millions, they may never recover...

major

I did not know ODU offered majors in lawn mowing or drywall hanging, cool! The do the jobs we dont want to do and now go to schools we do not want to go to!!

Public Money

Cut off public money, they will stop - quickly.

No more

As an alumnus of ODU, the only power I have is my checkbook. Don't bother calling me for donations any more. I do not support illegals. ODU's resources are limited and there are plenty of "legal" deserving students waiting for a chance.

Illegal students

Which part of "Illegal" ODU doesn't understand??? If person(s) are in this country= USA illegally, they are subject to be deported to their home countries. Since ODU is allowing illegal immigrants/ students to enroll/ attend classes, they might as well send money directly to drug smugglers, coyotes, sex traffickers, etc. Check status of each student, if they are in this country illegally, it is your obligation to contact proper Federal authorities & report illegals.

Makes ya wonder

Basically, ODU could harbor terrorists. Seems like a good way to stay under the radar until given orders.

student

About the student who wants to go to college - "what should he do now" - um, how about he applies to a college in the country where he is a citizen?

Citizenship? Who cares! Tuition money? We care!

I'll bet if they ran credit checks on them and found they weren't going to be able to come up with the tuition/fee money they'd get a non-acceptance letter.

UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS = ILLEGAL ALIENS

I just love the Pilot's misleading headline, "Undocumented Students." What type of childish and pathetic rubbish is this? Why doesn't the Pilot call these people what they truly are? They are Illegal Aliens/Immigrants, plain and simple. We need to stop walking on eggshells concerning this matter of great importance confronting our country. Wake up America:380,000 plus “anchor babies” were born in the U.S. in 2005 to illegal alien parents, making 380,000 babies automatically U.S.citizens.97.2% of all costs incurred from those births were paid by the American taxpayers 29% (630,000) convicted illegal alien felons fill our state and federal prisons at a cost of $1.6 billion annually (Out of 2 million people in local/state/federal jail. or prisons.) SOURCE:2006 (First Quarter) INS/FBI Statistical Report on Undocumented Immigrants

Once again...

Here we are at yet another example of "it is not my fault" or "it is not my responsibility" at the expense of state taxpayers. This is outright enabling the enemy. We can never get a hold on illegal aliens if the localities, private industries and any state or federally funded institution doesn't bother to do their job. People like to point the finger at ICE or DHS but the problem truly lies in those that enable these criminals. If you cut off the reason they stream across the border, they will not come. If Mexico suddenly started handing out free medical, free housing, free social payments, free college, non-taxed compensation, etc, we would see alot of our population heading south. We have to cut off all of these social feel good programs that don't bother to investigate and take action on any fraud in their system. That includes not only illegals but blatant fraud in our own citizens as well. I am so tired of paying through the nose for criminals and career welfare junkies.

Here's an idea to reduce the number of illigals.

Here's and idea to help cut down on the number of illegals and help the cut the debt the US has. At the borders, put up a building and charge those that want to enter the country what they would have paid to those that would smuggle them in. Some I've heard as much as $10,000. Then document them with finger prints, DNA, photos, etc and give them a work permit for a set length of time. With the control number on their work permit, they can be tracked from job to job through computer monitoring. Then they would be paying taxes, etc and therefore eligible for some benefits.
Or offer them if they joing the peace corp or work for the US government for a certain length of time, that they could then apply for citizenship and to bring the rest of their immediate family to the US.

RESPECT OUR SOVEREIGNTY

The University needs to get ahead of this and seriously address this issue before it gets out of hand. In no way, shape, or form should an illegal immigrant be allowed to attend a college or university at the expense of the American taxpayer. For the long term economic viability of our great country we cannot continue to a offer plethora of services to persons who do not respect our sovereignty and who shouldn't even BE HERE! My fellow Americans, this issue of illegal immigration must be addressed. We must secure the border, report immigrant status to the Fed/State governments, deny social services to suspect illegals, (except medical) and enforce the law.

Hysteria

You people need to wake up, and take some classes at ODU. It might benefit the hysterical commenters to be exposed to some diversity. Illegal immigrants are chastised because they come here with little education, then, when a few try to become more educated, the attacks start flying again.

Grow Up!

So says DHS Head Chertoff when questioned about Americans being required to show passports at border crossings. Soon you will need passports or Real ID to board any airplane, bus or train, and to deal with any federal agency. You must prove you are a citizen. Yet DHS allows undocumented immigrants to flood our nation freely to work, buy property, attend college, and access the social services network. Blaming ODU or other institutions is a childish response, when the problem is obvious. This nation has redefined who an alien is. You are.

Typical liberal leaning of academia.

Sitting in comfortable, cozy, government subsidized, tenured positions, academics invariably embrace this type of philosophy. If they had to actually join the blue collar work force and were paid by the hour, they might change their thinking.

Okay, fine...

Okay, they will accept illegal's as students, then they should receive no taxpayer dollars whatsoever.

I am tired of these mush-mouth elitists that run and hide from the real world in a college who presume they are more enlightened than those of us poor, unsophisticated rubes paying their saleries. They want to thumb their nose at the law, fine-we cut off thier funding.

Undocumented?

They are not "undocumented". They are ILLEGAL. As in, they are breaking a law.

Why should my tax money go to pay for their education? Will citizens of their country pay for my child to go to college?

No more tax $$$s for ODU - great, now the GA can fix the roads

Awesome! Because VA centers for higher learning want to ignore the immigration laws they should no longer receive any tax funds. Good news! Now the GA will have plenty of $$$ to pay for finally improving our roads! The GA can abolish HB 3202 - end the unconstitutional, all-appointed regional taxing authority, and still have plenty of tax funds to fix our roads! Excellent. Thanks ODU. One funny think I noticed in the story - did you notice that ODU uses an undocumented procedure for dealing with "undocumented" students? Maybe they ought to write it down, don'tcha think? "No tax funds for you - ODU!" (think Soup Nazi).

ODU is Failing the Community

It is not difficult to check each student's status, no more so than checking each student's SAT or GPA. The excuse offered is invalid and disingenuous. ODU should start serving the community that supports it by allowing ONLY legal immigrants and U. S. Citizens in as students, employees, etc.

Get with it ODU.

Let me guess...these are "honor" students....

Undocumented students...Illegal immigrants. And you expect them to uphold the schools honor code? This is someone you would want to employ? What else are they doing illegally? Enough is enough. Stop making honest, hard-working citizens support the lawbreakers. School alumni need to think about where their contributions are going.

No Excuse

There is no excuse of any kind for knowingly allowing Illegal Aliens into Virginia's colleges and Universities. They are a drain on society and take up positions that a legal US resident or citizen could occupy. And I don't care to hear about Illegal Aliens rights from the bleeding hearts and illegal alien advocates. As far as I'm concerned the only "rights" they should have is to be arrested and immediately deported, no questions asked, no hearings, nothing. Put them on an Air Force troop transport and fly them home when they are caught, period.

Lie cheat steal and you're a good and worthy student -

Let me get this right - A good Student - one who lies, cheats, steals and tolerates it. Let met get this right - a worthy student - one who lies, cheats an steals. Yes I want these kind of students work in my company and work for me. They lie, to get in , they cheat other legal residents/citizens and steal the public funds they do not have a right to for their own benefit. I think every admission officer should be canned and have charges brought against them. You do not have to check every applicant - only those that get accepted. I have friends and children of Friends who cannot attend college because they must work and when apply find out there are others ahead of them. I think Kaine should get a task force to check all students for legality. I wonder how many all of sudden would not show up for class. An outrageous idea I know - but as always, what part of illegal do they admissions folks not understand. Oh yes - they are Undocumented - that is not illegal - horse hockey....
