Tech's Brandon Flowers to skip senior year for NFL draft

Posted to: College Football Sports

Brandon Flowers' college football career is over, according to his father Willie. An All-American cornerback for Virginia Tech in his sophomore and junior seasons, Flowers will forego his senior year and declare for the this spring's NFL draft.

"Yep, he's declaring," Willie Flowers said by phone Sunday evening. "He's ready."

Flowers' father was interrupted during the call and could not provide further details. His son was third on the team in tackles this season with 86 and led the Hokies with five interceptions.

In the past two seasons, Flowers has amassed 137 tackles, 15.5 for loss, eight interceptions and 27 passes broken up.

He submitted his paperwork to the NFL advisory committee in December and learned the day after Christmas that he was projected as a second-round pick if he left school early.

"If there's a kid that I feel like, 'You're ready to go,' I'd tell him," Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said during last week's Orange Bowl preparations. "That's the way I am with Brandon Flowers."

Even so, Flowers' departure is a big blow for a Hokies defense that loses six other starters from this season to graduation.

They'll now have to replace three of four starting defensive linemen, two of three starting linebackers and two of four defensive backs.

Academics Never at the Top of VT's Jock's List

Hear about the fire at the VT Library? Both books destroyed - and one hadn't even been colored in yet.

Hey Wilkerson3

Wilkerson, if you're going to be policing the board for grammatical mistakes, you might want to learn how to spell 'grammar' first. I'm guessing you may be and Engineer also....LOL.

And....

Everybody gets stuck on two bad Tech players, who happened to be brothers, and start this thing like Tech is a Florida team that turns out criminals. Get over it already. Tech is an excellent school, Beamer is a great coach and there's no way that non-spelling dude that commented earned a college degree.

Frank the Tank

If you are a product of a VA Tech education, then my son will never attend.
Let the computer check your grammer/spelling if you can't!

By the way...

learn to spell. You are embarrassing VT.

What's Brandon ever done?

That's the dumbest blanket statement on a program I've ever heard. Brandon's a good kid and while I wish he'd stay, I also wish him well if he does leave. Don't let a few bad apples ruin the crop. 99% of these kids represent VT and the Commonwealth very well. I just returned from the Orange Bowl and never met a more polite bunch of kids. Grow up!

Hokies

As a Hokie alum all I can say is good riddance. As much as I love the reveniew that the football team provides, they our an embarassment to the commonwealth and the university. These football players are running around smoking reefer, hosting dog fights, and acting like hooligans. As much as we like the tv exposure and all the money that is coming into Blacksburg, I wish Frank would be a little bit more strick w/ the players. Can't we still be competitive and get some student atheletes who are better representatives of this great university and even better commonwealth?

Go Hokies!
