Posted to: Chesapeake News

Two Chesapeake residents have announced their intent to run for one of four school board seats this spring.

Melvin Marriner and Tina Pullen, will kick off their campaigns Thursday at 6 p.m., at Greenbrier Country Club, 1301 Volvo Parkway.

The terms for four school board members – School Board Chairman Tom Mercer, Jeff Bunn, Brenda Johnson and Ann Wiggins – expire in June. Wiggins, a member of the board since 2000 announced this month that she will not seek re-election. Elections are in May. According to a press release distributed Wednesday, Pullen and Marriner want higher teacher salaries, better retention programs, extended full-day kindergarten and career-centered academics. Marriner and Pullen both have children in Chesapeake Public Schools.

The terms of the remaining school board members – Sheila Hill-Russ, Barbara Head, Jay Leftwich, Harry Murphy and Vice Chairman Michael Woods, expire in June 2010.
