Mishap halts one circus act; show in Norfolk Thursday

Posted to: News Norfolk

Just days before the circus is to open its Norfolk run, a mishap in Richmond has forced a halt, at least temporarily, to one act.

During the Saturday afternoon performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Richmond Coliseum, some spectators were sprayed with spilled gasoline from a motorcycle in a high wire act in the show, said Crystal Drake, a spokeswoman for the circus.

No one was injured, but patrons were taken to a back room to be checked, Drake said by phone this morning. Some were given eyewash treatment as a precaution. Afterward, they were given special seating to watch the rest of the show.

Circus officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident, Drake said. She could not say if the act would be back in the show when the circus opens in Norfolk.

The circus opens on Thursday at Scope and runs through Sunday.

Mark,

It had nothing to do with cruelty to animals. There are a few trolls here who are happy being a big voice in a small room and offer nothing of value in their posts.

Or as I like to say, "Don't feed the trolls..."

peta

You have NO right to come to the Scope. Disband and leave the Circus alone! Remember: these "people" who don't want you to attend the Circus are the same ones who "...want fries with that?" along the Blvd near Rosemont Rd, march nude in front of the white house, and throw animals away in dumpsters in North Carolina. Now, back on topic: It sounds like the motorcycle thing was just a bad accident. It should be suspended until fully investigated. If it was just an accident, repair or replace the motorcycle.

circus story

some people are just plain idiots. as an animal lover myself i also see the need to put some of them in cages. i also think some of the peta people should be put in cages.

Circus

This is news?

huh??

Im still trying to figure out what that article had to do with the abuse of animals. I re-read it 4 times and i swear all i read was people being sprayed with gas after a failed motorcycle stunt. Was a monkey riding the motorcycle??

That'll teach 'em!

Serves them right for attending a show that abuses animals.

poco

Trolling today?

Otherwise that was the most morinic comment I've heard in quite a while...

All activities

utilizing gasoline should be banned!

Unfortunate...

Circuses should be "human" focused shows like Cirque du Soleil that don't involve caged animals. Its unfortunate that the accident occurred in an act that circuses should focus on. At least no one or non of the animals were hurt.
