GLOUCESTER

State Police said today that one Newport News man was killed and another was hurt after the car they were in was struck head-on Saturday by another vehicle in Gloucester County.

Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a State Police spokeswoman, identified the fatality victim as Daniel Martin Klapperich, 29, of the first block of Alpine St.; injured was Jason C. Fox, 27, of the 700 block of Plymouth Circle in Newport News. He was taken to a hospital and his condition was not available this afternoon.

The other driver is identified as Keith Lewis McGowan, 51, of the 6000 block of Shady Lane in Gloucester. He has been charged with drunken driving, Cotten said. He was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, she said.

Cotten said the wreck occurred at 6:35 p.m. when McGowan lost control of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma he was driving and it crossed over the center line of Route 614, Hickory Fork Road, about two miles southwest of Gloucester. The vehicle ran head-on into the 1993 Honda Civic being driven by Klapperich near the intersection with Clay Bank Road. Fox was a passenger in that vehicle.

Death Penalty

Keith should be put to death for what he did. Dan was one of my best friends, I'm overseas in Iraq and one day I check my email to find out my friend is dead. I hope he knows the lives he's ruined. Dan left behind a fiance and a little girl that now has no father.
