A 22-year-old Norfolk woman is in jail in Delaware tonight after state police there said they discovered more than 140 pounds of marijuana in her vehicle during a traffic stop.
Her arrest marked the second time this week that Delaware authorities have made a large marijuana bust along U.S. 13, arresting someone with ties to Hampton Roads.
In the latest incident, Sherri N. Taylor is charged with a variety of felony drug offenses, included trafficking, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and using a vehicle for drug distribution. She also is charged with driving with a suspended license and other misdemeanor traffic offenses. She is being held in lieu of posting $152,160 bond.
Cpl. Gary Fournier, a Delaware State Police spokesman, said Trooper Mark Thomas, 27, a rookie on his first week of patrol duty, spotted Taylor driving south on U.S. 13 near Harrington, Del. about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Thomas, who was working with a training officer, checked the license plate on the Chevrolet Blazer. It was initially just a training exercise, Fournier said. But when the check revealed that the plates belonged on a different vehicle, the classroom became the real world.
The troopers activated the lights on the cruiser they were in and pulled the SUV over.
During the stop, the troopers noticed "leafy material" in the center console of the Blazer, Fournier said. A subsequent search revealed the stash of marijuana in three laundry bags and Taylor was then arrested without incident. Its street value was set at about $120,000.
Taylor was alone in the vehicle. Her street address was not released.
Earlier this week, a man who said he was heading north from a trip to Virginia Beach, was stopped on U.S. 13 near Laurel, Del., after state police said he ran a red light.
A search of the van he was driving turned up more than 100 pounds of marijuana valued at about $85,000.
Donald P. Gayle, 49, of North Brunswick, Del., was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a gun in commission of a felony and other charges. He is being held in jail in lieu of posting a $141,700 bond.

She was Southbound towards home in Va. The other guy was from Delaware driving North from Va Beach. Perhaps they should send each other a kite(jail communication), & trade the wholesale dealers #'s that are already at their destination. Then they could at least avoid a few of the charges, when they are busted, by vigilant Del. Troopers. That is, if they plan to continue their job in the Pot Peddling Business. This could also save fuel, which is fluctuating around $3 a gallon, at this time. It would also lower their costs logistically, in this illegal, tax free, enterprise that they are engaged in. I'm glad it's Del. taxpayers that will be paying for their lodging, and not Va. taxes. That is if there is tax in Del. Last time I went to Philly, there was no sales tax, at the restaurants in Del.
240lbs in a week?
240x52=12,500+/- pounds of weed leaving VaBch a year...sounds like the beaches farm system is still alive!
Wow
You would think someone who had enough money to buy that much marijuana, would have the money to properly register the vehicle! I mean if someone wants to be in the dope peddling business, I would guess they would make sure even a taillight wasn't out, never mind having the wrong plates. What a dummy! lol
