HAMPTON

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding on Wednesday officially opened a new main distribution center in Hampton to warehouse materials for its Newport News shipyard.

The move consolidates more than 20 warehouse operations and nearly 200 workers into a single location in the Copeland Industrial Park, said Bob Gunter, senior vice president of operations for the Newport News yard. The change will improve and streamline the storage and handling of materials and enhance employees' work conditions, he said.

The shipyard has signed a 15-year lease for 360,747 square feet of space.
