ODU professor injured in collision on bridge-tunnel

Posted to: News Suffolk Transportation and Traffic

A two-vehicle wreck on a span of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel complex shut down traffic for more than an a hour Saturday and left an Old Dominion University official hurt.

There were no serious injuries to either driver, however.

Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a State Police spokeswoman, said the incident occurred at 8:54 a.m. on the northbound lane of Interstate 664, over the small boat channel, amid traffic heading from Suffolk to Newport News.

The collision involved a black Pontiac driven by Shanna Averre, 32, of Chesapeake, and a Jeep Cherokee driven by Dana D. Burnett of Portsmouth.

The impact caused the Jeep to flip several times.

Burnett, 64, was trapped for a time in the wreckage and had to be extricated by rescue personnel from the Newport News Fire Department.

Because both drivers were wearing seat belts, Cotten said, the two suffered only minor injuries.

Burnett stepped down in 2006 from an administrative post at Old Dominion University, having been dean of students, vice president for student services or both since 1974.

Burnett is now chairman of and a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling in ODU's Darden College of Education.

Averre has been charged with making an unsafe lane change.

I'm not a hypocrite, i treat other drivers, people and pedestrian with respect.

I guess it's easier to place blame and say how horrible it is and wow she deserves the death penalty then to say wow I wonder what happened that must have been scary. I'm glad everyone is okay. But it's so much easier to say oh she was probably on her cell, texting, not paying attention.

Last time I checked no one wakes up and with a car accident on their agenda! To do list includes: I think I’m gonna clip the back end of a vehicle create mayhem on the roads and close down a major interstate. While nearly killing another driver or myself or both.

THANK ABOUT THAT!

Jess

I hope you have your karma in check.

Okay these comments are truely unfair.

So all these comments that are rude you were there to see what happen right? You know the facts. Get a life, I hope your karma is in check because this could be you next time. All your negative energy. You weren't there you don't know her and you obviously don't understand that the officer at the accident made the final decision on the ticket. So what it locked the tunnel up for over an hour it's for sure not a 1st or a last.

ac·ci·dent –noun 1. an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents.

Since you really didn't have your facts straight before you made all these judgements:

The truth: She fell asleep at the wheel. During her relocation back to Hampton Roads what a warm welcome she got from you judgemental non fact having jerks.

No your facts before you are so negatively judgemental!

Accidents Happen....

I guess it is safe to assume that no one that has commented below has every been in an accident??!! They happen people…sometimes to good people who are not on the cell phone, texting, speeding, drinking, or any other EXPLANABLE action. I happen to be the person that caused the accident on Saturday and it wasn’t because of any of the reasons spoken of below. The parties involved and the police no what happened and that is all that matters. I feel awful for what happened and the damage that was done but the fact is accidents happen. I happen to have a very good driving record and feel that I am a responsible driver. I thank God that he was looking out for all involved and no one was injured.

Dchild

Having read the entire article, I came to the conclusion that your teacher was the victim and was not charged. Being that the other person was given a citation for an improper lane change, I concluded that the reason for the accident was AN IMPROPER LANE CHANGE. Good grief our country is in trouble.

Everyone has opinons and at least one consistent body part

I guess eveyone posting opinions about the collision witnessed what happened first hand. The events leading to that collision could have been a number of things, including changing lanes while in the tunnel. However, I don't remember reading any comments addressing that theory. It just so happens that I attend ODU and know of the professor. I would write more, but I'm going to leave that subject alone. Just becasue I know the guy, doesn't mean that I even know all the facts either. I wish others would do the same before commenting.

Driving 101

And THIS is the biggest reason for collisions while changing lanes; checking your mirror and NOT YOUR BLIND SPOTS!

Unless they have changed how driving is taught, this was taught to me on day one, DON'T RELY ON MIRRORS and SIGNAL TO CHANGE LANES!

The test for acquiring a license in Virginia is astounding [and I’m a native of Hampton Roads], but even more astounding is the amount of people that still have one after the blatant disregard for safe driving.

Hampton Roads Drivers

Hello,
I am visiting the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area from Tampa,Florida. After driving several weeks now in the Hampton Roads area I see that a great majority of Virginia drivers drive too fast and tailgate too much! I thought Tampa traffic was bad, which it is but that is no excuse.
Virginia Law enforcement seems to be non-existant, and is only around to speed trap drivers at certain times in certain areas. No one observes the 55mph limits any where .... Can't you Virginia drivers just observe at the very least 55 mph in the Monitor-Merrimac tunnel.....please!. I tried but I almost get rear-ended. I have also driven I64 up to Richmond 4 times and three times there have been major accidents on very nice weather days what gives?........ Speeders.
The VDOT traffic website is terrible and the VDOT radio system is way too old for 2008!
Check out Tampa Bay traffic sites to see how a modern systems works and how Virginias' should look! State Troopers need to pace traffic or really start ticketing!

Another one

Who needs to have her license permanently revoked for being STUPID in public. I know there are those out there that think we should be able drive faster because the roads and cars are designed for that; however, the only problem with that process is - we're not! We've shown repeatedly we can't follow rules or laws, we have a total lack of common sense, we are completely and totally selfish and self-centered at all times. Until stupidity, recklessness, carelessness and all the other 'nesses are removed, we'll continue to hear about horrific accidents that change peoples lives forever.

cell phone and driving

I'm sure cell phones have caused tragic deaths. I see people with them as if they are gluded to their ear, they can't pay for items at i.e. 7-11 without hold it to their ear. No way would i use a cell going cross a bridge or tunnel. The person was lucky she din't go over the bridge. The problem is out of control nothing can be done.I see people with cell phones who don't look like they have eaten for days. It's carzy seeing a person look like they are talking to themselves. When i see a person talking on a cell i get out of their way on the road. They walk 'round stores talking very loud as if i want to hear them. The next generation will do the same.

Reckless Endangerment

The Jeep flipped several times on 664 over the James River? What would have happened if she had flipped off the bridge? Cases like this show that drivers on the interstates are really out of control and the police really don't do much about it. All they seem to care about is causing near accidents by hiding out to pop speeders (and rake in cash). They should be on patrol around area interstates to help calm traffic. You see how much more civil drivers are when there are police cars on the roads so why not have a safety patrol? Oh yeah because then they would not be able to make money off us.

Thank the Lord both were o.k. but

How do you get into a wreck on a well-paved straight-a-way like I-664? Not paying attention (cells & text messaging), speeding, tail-gating, etc. is how. The violator's car should have been lifted and dropped off the bridge so I will have another structure to hold fish. I drive approx. 40,000 miles a year around Hampton Roads. You have no idea how bad it is. A majority of the traffic problems are caused by irresponsible drivers.

It's everywhere

I was standing in line at a local grocery store waiting to pay for my merchandise ..... I was browsing through those last last minute merchandise offers right next to the register when I caught the guy behind say something to me, but I chose to ignore it. He seemed to say something to me again. I turned, excused myself, and I asked to to repeat himself since I had not caught what he had said. He responded with a bizarre answer, and only then did I realize he was on the phone via a wireless ear piece. He seemed to be talking to himself, talking about how his friend had to take the car in for a flat tire repair. He seemed oblivious to me and those around him. Still, I prefer to meet these folks in the grocery store vs on the street.

I have a question...

I wonder if she was talking on a cell phone when she changed lanes. This sounds like a classic "cell phone user in la-la land" case.

More than just an unsafe lane change

Ms. Averre needs more than a charge for an unsafe lane change. She needs to have her license revoked and forced to attend a driving class to learn the rules of the road all over again. Stuff like this happens all over Hampton Roads everyday! People DO NOT know how to drive properly. If Ms. Averre would have check her mirror properly before moving over, this whole incident would have been prevented.

It's not that hard to look in the mirror before moving over. Again, not that hard!
