PETA blasts Fox Television for turning away fowl ads

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is crying foul on the Fox television network for sidelining its Super Bowl effort to keep fowl off the dinner table.

The network turned down $4.2 million from Norfolk-based PETA, which sought to broadcast two ads targeting Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The spots were to air during Super Bowl XLII, which had its biggest audience ever with nearly 100 million viewers.

Fox cited a network policy of not airing "viewpoint or issue-advocacy" ads. But PETA officials have said that was unfair because the network did air paid ads from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy targeted at stopping teenage drug abuse.

The PETA ads, titled "Kentucky Fried Cruelty," accuse KFC of torturing chickens.

A Fox spokesperson told Broadcasting & Cable magazine that the network makes a distinction between ads that advocate a specific viewpoint and ads that "serve to inform" the public on an "issue of concern."

PETA dismissed arguments that there was a difference in the nature of the ads.

"Virtually all ads advocate something," the group said, "whether it's buying a certain car, drinking a particular beer, abstaining from drugs or showing kindness to animals."

PETA sent a letter to Fox officials accusing the network of "misrepresenting its policy" for accepting ads.

"It's ridiculous that the network has no objection to ads that advocate killing animals and eating them," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "But it won't give a paid ad with a humane message equal time."

KFC is extra cruel to chickens

KFC breeds and drugs chickens to grow so big so fast that their legs become deformed, slices the birds’ throats open, and dumps them in boiling water while they’re still conscious. The poor birds are literally scalded to death. Members of KFC’s own advisory panel have even resigned because the company refuses to improve its standards. That's funny

Isn't Peta the same organization that took dogs and cats from North Carolina animal shelters, promising to find them homes, only to euthanize them before leaving the parking lots? And didn't they toss the carcasses in a grocery store dumpster? And, on one occasion, didn't one of said peta people promise to find a home for a dog owned by a shelter worker, and instead kill it as soon as they arrived in Norfolk?

But somehow we're supposed to beleive PETA is against animal abuse? Right.

Let's all blame PETA cuz we don't care about animal suffering.

If people took the time to look at meetyourmeat.com or kentuckyfriedcruelty.com they would understand just what happens to the animals before they end up on the dinner table. It ISN'T pretty.

Most reasonable people would not want their dog or cat subjected to the sort of abuse factory farm animals endure. However, they fail to realize (or accept) that all sentient beings have the capacity to feel fear and pain.

Have the courage to get the facts on factory farmed animals, then decide for yourself if you want to be responsible for their suffering.

Sorry I didn't go for my doctorate...

Angela,

I stopped after my second Masters degree; where'd you get your Phd? Was it one of Virginia's Ivy League powerhouses or a top tier law school like Regent?

Or does your statement, "Most of you do not have a good education" refer to the college interns and high school students getting course credit for their work in a non-profit office for experience but who will not graduate for a couple more years? You're correct that you probably make more money than those youngsters.

PETA's good work

There’ve been a lot of comments about what PETA should do with the money earmarked for the Super Bowl commercials. I asked someone I know at PETA, and the money to pay for them was donated specifically for that purpose--meaning they would only get the money to pay for the commercials, not for other things. I wish I had a few extra million to give away. If I did, some would go to PETA for their spay/neuter clinic, SNIP, which travels around Hampton Roads. I took my cats there to be vaccinated, and their veterinarian was wonderful.

People have mentioned that PETA should help the homeless. Well, they already do. PETA has been giving old fur coats to homeless people for years, and even sent some to Afghan refugees a few years back. I also read that PETA put on a free Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter in Las Vegas with Pamela Anderson--all the families at the shelter got a hot meal for the holiday.

I don't live in

Slippery slope

"Typical PETA, trying to bully and strongarm everyone into seeing things their way, and thinking they have a leg to stand on"

When you find it is ok to limit one group at any puruit because you agree, disagree, or prefer another point of view you have crossed a line. Do be careful. Often the popular opinion can be dead wrong. The difference between us and countries like China or Nazi Germany of the past is that dissent is part of our fiber. When you find it is ok to limit anothers speach it is actually reducing your own rights. angelak, your writing is incoherent. "Highly educated" you say? BTW, I prefer to be viewed as a bit of a redneck. I eat meat. I have shot an animal to make it into meat. However, I will not limit your rights because of my beliefs. What Fox did was wrong.

Show me the money Peta...you know you have it Peta execs

Ok, I am most certainly NOT a redneck. I am also from this area and can't stand Peta. Just because those of us are opposed to Peta, doesn't mean we are not well informed, or are redneck animal killers. I am highly educated, and love animals.
For those involved in Peta: Look around you. Most of you do not have a good education and/or job, or direction in life. You spend your time 'being' something. 'Being' a hippie, or a garbage eater, or in this case, saving the poor animals...so you think. How many doctors, lawyers, business professionals or anyone making a decent living do you see protesting?
How MANY animals does Peta help? Show me the money.
You whoop up the whole PETA thing and make signs, headlines and headaches for normal citizens trying to get through downtown during the circus...but what good are you doing? You need to get a life of your own before you set out to save a lion that isn't even in the circus (last years protest).
Kudo's to the shrewd business execs at Peta, you sure do know how to appeal to the fadists and make a lot of money for yourselves.

Yeah Right

So PETA killed 97% of the animals it took in 2006 so who is more dangerous to animals?

Quoted from court testimony:"a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. "

Gee, PETA only saved 12 animals that year and killed the rest.... Nice job..

PETA

I think that FOX would have shown the commercial if it had been requested by girl scouts rather than PETA.

Oh if these two comments are

Oh if these two comments are not approved for viewing then every notion that I have about people in general is true. If you can let others post on eating meat is okay, then you have major issues.
