Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Primary pride

Many people have been upset about being asked what party they wanted to vote for in the recent primary. If they know the views of the candidates and what they stand for, however, they should be proud to support the party that best reflects their ideals. Also, when you tell poll workers what party you are voting for, they still don't know what candidate you are voting for. If you're a Democrat, you could be voting for either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. After all, this is the primary election and not the final.

It scares me to think there are people out there who don't vote. Our vote is our voice and it is our responsibility to choose a leader for our country.

I won't vote just to vote. I need a reason.

Being I was one of the first to bring up this issue(in a letter to the editor that was printed in the paper)let me assure those that I scare by my not voting for any of the above at this time, you need not fear me or anyone else that holds my values and morals that is refusing to lower most all our standards to settle for just anyone because I must vote. At sixty years old maybe my thinking is just too old fashioned for the "New Hope generation" (my own kids included in this catagory) Evidently I failed with my adult children along with others of my generation. They fail to see the lack of ideas as to how we accomplish all this "Hope" with no workable plan, so far, out of any of the top candidates. In the next months hopefully the truth and real answers to real questions brings a true leader to the forefront. To those of my generation that are being sucked into a "pipe dream" with a peace and love theme toward an enemy that wants us all dead or converted you must still either be high or have lost your long term memory already.

last post

Sorry I got cut off... If you have any questions, or care what I was going to say, just post a bletter asking me to finish it, though I doubt that anybody really cares. But if you do I am happy to write!

Senators, and Candidates, and Governers OH MY!!!

Remeber to be aware of who you are voting for. Where did you get your information about the candidate you support? If you said the television, go find a source where you can read your information. Do your best to find a source without a political bias. Most media is biased, they way you can tell the difference is if there is about the same amount of critisism of candidates on both sides of the political spectrum. If either the Democrat or Republican candidate is much more heavily critisized, the media is more likely than not biased. Truth be told, there is a nearly equal amount of critisizem of candidates on both sides since before the dionosaurs. Be sure to be well informed of all the candidates before voting for any of them. Do make certain that they not only agree with you on the most issues, but also on the issues important to you. (for those of you still reading, the Wizard of OZ reference at the top "Senators, and Candidates, and Governers OH MY!!! really has nothing to do with this bletter) Also be certain to be aware of how the candidate acts. Is the candidate running a series of attack ads? If so, then why does the person need to tear others down rather that bu

Not Everyone Should Vote

It scares me that so many vote in ignorance. Voting While Ignorant is far more dangerous than juggling loaded firarms or driving drunk. As recent history shows, far more people can be injured by this scourge!

How things work

The best and the brightest don't want to get into the snake pit called politics. For many, voting is an emotional issue, not a thought provoking search for the person best qualified to do the job that you find in the business world. The candidates themselves want to talk in platitudes and vague references. These candidate speeches are more like pep rallys, the stuff of wishes and dreams, rather than providing information that would give you an idea about what you could expect if they got into office. So long as we put up with it we'll get more of the same. Only when you demand better, will you get better.

Low voter turnout...

Give us someone who is worth the dynamite to blow them to hell, and we'll vote for her / him / it.

The problem is that no one can be found to even meet with that criteria...

it scares me

that so many people voting have no idea what their candidate is all about. It scares me that these people buy into generalizations without knowing the specifics, e.g., what the costs of promises will be, how it will be paid for, and if attainment is realistically possible. Most of all, it scares me that we have to choose from candidates who aren't the best and brightest this country has to offer. Is it any wonder why our voting percentages are usually low?
