Virginia Beach city offices open for business today

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

All city offices, libraries and other facilities are open today.

The city does not recognize President’s Day as a holiday, according to a city news release.

The next scheduled holiday that will close city offices will be Memorial Day, May 26.

Virginia Beach courts are closed.

Stinky Fish Either Way!

If you care about President's Day, then as the Beastie Boys say "you got to fight for your right, to paaaarty." However, MLK is not the issue. The issue is your poorly disguised expression of hate. Or to clarify, would you protest as loud, or at all, if President's Day was honored and MLK Jr. Day was not? In your answer is a glimpse into your true heart.

MLK believed in reminding America that our Constitution claims that all people have certain inalienable rights. His message was one of hope, character, and love for all people, not just blacks. In fact, by honoring him you are honoring the framers of our Constitution; a few of whom were U.S. Presidents. Yes, Lincoln helped abolish slavery. So in honoring him through President's Day, you are honoring MLK. Unity, it's amazing and possible when we find mutual respect.

MLK Jr. Day is a day for all Americans to honor a great man. Some of you believe this is a "black" holiday, but just relax. So far all of our presidents have been white, so make that whitey day until it changes. For the rest of us, thank God for our Founding Fathers, and thank God for MLK. Both have done their part to make America great, but are we currently doing

Red Herring Appreciation Day

I believe we need a national holiday honoring all the red herrings who have been exploited in the post below so beautifully explaining the classic logical fallacy. End animal abuse now.

Does it matter!?

Why does it matter? I mean if you don't like it than move. If you want President's day off so bad then take it off and don't go to work, simple as that. If you feel you need to work on MLK day, then go to work! Simple as that. There are many holidays where stores and offices are still open. Nobody is ever happy in this world. It's always someone who wants to complain about something. How about we just have no holidays, huh? Would that make everyone feel better?

After reading several of the

After reading several of the posts as well as mine from earlier, it hit me..... The city of VA Beach is not closed, BUT, I would all most state my life on the fact that IF we finally get a black president in office, IT will be celebrated!!!!! I beleive in equal rights for all, but, at the same time I am sick of having black history month shuffed down my throat. Why must the world put one race better then the other?

TCC

What a waste. I had school today. Thank goodness the buses were running a Weekday schedule. Yeah, they ran 3/4 empty today (I should know: I'm one of the 6 in VB that actually ride HRT buses because I choose not to drive and I'm one of the 14 who ride HRT buses for any reason in VB)

Several holidays are a waste of public money not only MLK day

There are several holidays that are examples of poor stewardship of taxpayers money. Columbus day; a day to honor a European explorer who did NOT discover America. Labor day; a day to honor workers, who cares? And my personal favorite, New Years day; a day to celebrate one more revolution around the Sun. All stupid reasons (in my opinion) to have a holiday...and each year they waste billions of dollars of taxpayer's money. Agree with them or not, at least the other holidays have a somewhat legitimate reason (religious or commemorative) for their existence. Do I take off work on these holidays, sometimes, but I usually work. But that doesn't change the fact that they are largely a waste of money. We don't need a paid holiday to honor those we respect.

holiday

I wrote a comment about this, but don't see it posted....I'm in agreement with all that posted this is ridiculous...why wasn't my comment posted? Was it because I said the NAACP would be on their backsides if they didn't get off for MLK, Jr's holiday????

What a sad world we live in!!!

It is pretty sad that Virginia Beach is not honoring our Presidents, Yet, they are willing to honor MLK. I understand that MLK did good for people, BUT so did our Presidents (some better then others). VB should be ashamed of themselves!!! There is no reason for some cities should allow certain holidays when others don't, last time I checked, today is a Federal holiday. Am I wrong?

va beach offices open

It is so obvious how this area is intimidated and ran by the NAACP. We as a nation are running scared of all black americans because of salvery and 150 years ago. Its pathetic that we as a nation can not get beyond this matter and live in the present not in the past. Presidents day is important to all americans, not just white, but as everyone knows MKL day is and was defined for the black race, as is Black History Month, ...hmmm is there a white history month, an asian history month, a canadian history month. get over it and stop the labeling and the racist bull. MLK day is important to history, as is presidents day. Dont down size one and over imbelish the other.

Examples of Red Herrings (See Below)

A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to "win" an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic. This sort of "reasoning" has the following form:

1. Topic A (President's Day) is under discussion.
2. Topic B (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) is introduced under the guise of being relevant to topic A (when topic B is actually not relevant to topic A).
3. Topic A is abandoned.

In the examples provided below, what we have are emotional appeals to ignorance. I would guess it stems from the authors' racial animus toward blacks generally and/or nativism.

ouyr schools are closed in

ouyr schools are closed in honor of our Presidents...shame that city council can't see the whole picture

What a shame

Virginia Beach can honor MLK who is not recognized by anyone except the liberal feel good bunch of PC addicts cannot honor our presidents? Good grief what a bunch of wussies running the city.

Va Beach Staying Open

YOU must have been reading my mind breal4real!! It is RIDICULOUS that they can take a legal holiday for MLK, Jr., when he was NEVER one of our Presidents. Yet, they stay OPEN, and won't acknowledge our forefathers, who help found this country!!! A PRESIDENT outways a black leader ANYDAY. Guess they were afraid that if they DIDN'T take MLK,Jr's holiday, the NAACP would burn their tales!!

It is due to dishonorable Dubya

For the current president you can not honor the day. Hopefully the Beach can bring it back with the next Commander in Chief. Till then you have dishonorable president's day. Dr. King's honor speaks volumes.

Bobby Out!!

I agree it is very sad.

I agree it is very sad.

Wow...

Don't recognize President's Day as a holiday...but quick to recognize MLK Day as a holiday...simply pathetic.
