Actor Danny Glover will be honored at ODU film festival

NORFOLK

Actor Danny Glover will be in Norfolk on April 5 to receive a lifetime achievement award from the ONFilm Festival, presented by Old Dominion University with the city of Norfolk.

Those who want a close look at the Los Angeles police sergeant from all those "Lethal Weapon" films or the cruel husband in "The Color Purple" or the homeless sharecropper in "Places in the Heart" can find him at Granby Theater.

Glover was selected as this year's honoree because the festival's theme is "Reel Politics," and Glover is a political activist, said Peter Schulman, co-artistic director of the festival and an ODU French professor.

"Almost all of his films are politically engaged," Schulman said on Monday.

Another Hollywood star, actress Mia Farrow, also will appear, in a prefestival event.

Glover has his own production company, Louverture Films, which specializes in cinema with a social conscience. He produced "Trouble the Water," a film about the failure of American government during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. It recently won best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

Glover has said that he became socially aware through his parents, both of whom were members of the NAACP.

The gala for him will include video clips, the awards presentation, appetizers and dancing to The Rhythm Kings.

Last year's lifetime achievement award, and the first such honor for the ODU film festival, went to actress Ellen Burstyn.

The film festival was begun a decade ago but raised its profile last year when it joined forces with the city and inaugurated the achievement award.

Farrow will give her talk at 7:30 p.m. March 27 as part of the President's Lecture Series at ODU.

Farrow is on a crusade to offer assistance to the victims of genocide in the Darfur region of western Sudan, and will speak on that subject.

Farrow's program, in the North Cafeteria of ODU's Webb Center, is free and open to the public.

Numerous actors, directors and producers are scheduled to take part in receptions and programs linked to the film screenings.

Most on-campus films will be shown at University Theatre, 46th Street and Hampton Boulevard. Movies also can be seen off campus at the Naro Expanded Cinema and at the George M. and Linda H. Kaufman Theatre at the Chrysler Museum of Art.

All of the films, in this election year, are related to politics, Schulman said. Older films, such as the 1976 "All the President's Men," will be shown, along with newer films, including "Missing in America," about a haunted Vietnam War veteran portrayed by Glover.

A schedule of films and programs is at www.odu.edu/onfilmfest.

Tickets for the gala are $25 and go on sale at 11 a.m. Friday, along with admission to more than 30 film showings and receptions set for March 29 through April 5.

For tickets, call the box office 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at (757) 683-5305.

March then. Its your right.

March then. Its your right. But just get a life. I think its funny that b/c I disagree with you then you call me a liberal. I guess if standing up for the 1st ammendment means I'm a liberal than I guess I am. I also believe in the 2nd ammendment. Does that make me a conservative? I believe in the ENTIRE constitution - not just the ones that make my points on an internet blog. I don't know you "BIG MIKE" but I can assure you I'm no "little liberal" who is star struck. I'm actually 6'2" and I weigh 205 lbs. I'm 28 yeas old & I've served 2 tours in Iraq. I may be going again. You're welcome. I also don't agree with evrything about that war (I'm sure you do), but I do believe in duty, country and service. R u serving? So while you're playing arm-chair activist & getting worked up over a "parakeet" to the point you will vote people out of office & protest the largest university in Hampton Roads go ahead. Lighten up - I'm not worshipping Danny Glover. I just liked a movie. But I don't HATE so much that I'm moved to do ridiculous things. BTW... ODU is the ONLY university of the ones you mentioned where you can get a PHD. Its also responsible for more economic stimulous

jasonm let us complete your education for you.

We have several outstanding institutions of higher learning here. To name a few Christopher Newport, Norfolk State, Viginia Wesleyan and many others. But really and truly where YOU need help is, OUR TAX DOLLARS support ODU and as such (especially in a time of war) someone we support with our tax dollars shouldn't be honoring an anti-American. To quote you "I don't agree with Glover, but you can all admit you loved him in the Lethal Weapon series... "Hey man, I'm too old fo this _hit" & then the toilet blows up!" Has it ever occured to you that the anti-American Glover, is nothing more than a parakeet? He did not think of these word, nor did he write the script. You are a star-struck little liberal and seem to think that the parakeets of Hollywood earn a podeum and should be given a free ride. Glover is at the same level as all but a handful of the parakeets. HE has NO EDUCATION, yet you and your star struck budddies will hang on his every word. I'm all for a march on ODU to make my voice of opposition heard. Any state politician that shows up there should be removed from office.

You people

r idiots. If the guy wants to say things you don't agree with... don't go to his awards show. Simple as that. I don't agree with Glover, but you can all admit you loved him in the Lethal Weapon series... "Hey man, I'm too old fo this _hit" & then the toilet blows up! You know you loved him then. Turn down Rush, Hannity & Bill O for a second & simply don't show up. But if Danny Glover wants to say ridiculous things - let him. You all are saying moronic things & nobody is going to your place of biz & protesting you. Its still a free country, & its no more free for idiots like you, me & Danny Glover or our dear solgers.

Yeah - lets protest ODU - our only legit university in Hampton Roads that does so much for this area for even having the audacity to utter Danny Glover's name!

Amen Rose!

I couldn't have said it any better. And I won't just repeat my opinion since you did it so well. Why is this 'America Hater' being honored by anybody? Shame on you ODU! I shun all the works this man has done. He has lost his license to his citizenship here (IMO), and it's not 'free expression' when a man like this seeks to deny YOUR free expression. We don't want him!

Sweet

What is there not a American hating world leader that is available for him to visit?

Danny this is not San Fran, we actually love our country here.

Isnt he a socialist whio

Isnt he a socialist whio ahngs with the czar of Venezula?

TRUTH IS WHAT IT IS

My family has a long history of service to the USA. Grandfathers, Uncles, my Father, Siblings & I have all served in the military & civil service. I am glad to be a citizen of the USA. I know this country has done many great things. However, this nation has done more than it's share of wrong also. Yes the genocide of Native Americans was terrorism. To enslave a race of people after declaring this nation a Democracy, was terrorism. To deny women, of all races, the right to vote, was terrorism. All Jim Crow laws were terrorism. The lynching of members of minority groups, which has continued into modern times, is terrorism.
To know the truth & speak it, doesn't make one any less patriotic than an ardent flag waver. Indeed, it shows that one can love one's country despite it's history.
In case some suggest I leave this nation, I'm not. My family has been here longer & given more than some of the "Ultra Patriotic".

How much of our tax dollars are going to this?

ODU does not need to be funding awards or honor a person that is so totally against our country. I'm serious about forming a protest against ODU and Glover and any other anti-American that shows up here. If they have a right to spew their anti-American venom, then the rest of us have a RIGHT to protest them. What an insult this is to our brave men and women in the military. I would like to see the PILOT publish which of our state politicians will be there. It's bad enough they have demonstrated their lack of knowledge of the state constitution, now they're going to give comfort to a supporter of our enemy's. NOT without being in the hot-seat they're not! They need to think about that.

ODU is honoring an ANTi-american?!?!

I find it totally disgusting that in a military town in a time of war, ODU finds it necessary to honor an anti-American and communist support such as Glover. He was signatory to the "Conscience of the World" letter shortly after 9/11 attacks which states, "the U.S. was in no position to pass moral judgment on the terrorists who had perpetrated the slaughters. One of the main purveyors of violence in this world has been this country, whether it's been against Nicaragua, Vietnam or wherever." He has criticized patriotism in general by saying, "It's basically this rabid [post-9/11] nationalism that has its own kind of potential of being maniacal, in some sense. As we march down and wave the flags, we must be sure of what we're waving them for." He has pledged support for communist dictators such as, Castro and Chavez (close friend to Ahmadinejad), supports the Maoist group "Not In Our Name" (which directs the Revolutionary Communist Party). Chavez has sponsored two of his films "Toussaint" and "General in his Labyrinth". Where do we get a license to protest Glover and ODU the day he comes? Which VA politicians will be there? If they are there, then they support Glover and need to be o

Bush did it

Hey it's Danny Glover. Can someone ask him if he still thinks George Bush knocked down the Twin Towers. Funny how everyone criticizes Mel Gibson when he states his opinion, but can't say anything about the leftists. Maybe I should get Danny to sign my Che Gueverra shirt.
