VIRGINIA BEACH

Police have charged a 15-year-old First Colonial High School student with a felony for sending a text message that threatened gun violence at the school this week, said Det. John Allen of the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The student, who is not being named, was arrested and charged early Saturday with transmitting a threat using an electronic device, Allen said.

Police said earlier this week that they wanted prosecutors to charge the student with a felony to send a strong message.

OMG!!! Kids today are so ill behaved...

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

Felony kinda harsh

I agree that serious punishment should be awarded. However, a felony charge is steep for a dumb 15 yo kid. An ignorant comment sent via text message shouldnt follow him for the rest of his life. Maybe the school or school board can inact tougher restrictions within the schools.

Jamming Cell phone and text message uses...

would be a liability. Suppose that something happens inside the classroom and the school's occupants are not able to get to a landline? With all of the emergencies we've seen in our schools recently, it would be a liability to block cell usage.

Jam cell phone and text messaging on school grounds

This one is easily solved...simply jam all cell phone and text messages within 100 yards of any school. If a student really needs to make a call (i.e. an emergency, etc.), then they can do it the old fashioned way, go down to the front desk and ask permission to use a phone. This way the call be verified by school officials and it will cut down on the use of cell phone and text messages. Fight technology with technology!!!!

How can you pass judgment....

....without knowing the wording of the text messge?

This is not "Kid Stuff" in my mind

And a felony it should be. Teach him a good lesson and let all the copy cats see what they will get also. If he/she is let off with a slap on the wrist they will go back to school with a "rock star status". If they were an honor roll student the system and parents failed teaching a 15 year old real life common sense. If they are a troubled student, without serious consequences they will only get more brazen. This kid needs real help, and punishment, not a "time out".

kids these days are just dumb....

period....i've noticed that trend lately....basically, its kids raising kids these days, and you can see the effects....just buckle up, people.....we're going to see many, many more stories of kids/teenagers doing things that make you scratch your head....

Belay my last...

so many stories about school issues, they're all starting to sound the same...

but nonetheless, he should have known better...

Haven't these kids learned anything?

I can't believe these kids take school safety as a joke. As I look at the stats, I can't help but notice that the young males are hardwired with stupid genes these days. Would not logic and common sense dictate that since school violence is becoming more common these days across America, that one should not bring any guns or their look-alikes on school campus? I can't help but think this problem is a result of a silent evolution occurring in our young (male) population, rather than poor parenting and a divided society...
