Bill's Flea Market won't reopen at Beach site after fire

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Two weeks ago, with $300 she had saved from her $250-a-week job, Brittany Strawhand became an entrepreneur.

She opened a booth at Bill's Flea Market off Virginia Beach Boulevard, selling secondhand baby stuff - strollers, cribs, clothes and the like.

Tuesday afternoon, she sat inside one of about a dozen cars that peppered the parking lot at Bill's, all of them with occupants staring ahead at the building.

Her new business was the victim of a fire on Monday that heavily damaged the old FX building and the wares of the 65 vendors who sold there.

"It's hard to stay home," said Brittany, 17. "It's like your house burning down and not being there with your family."

Robin Barry, the owner of Bill's - she doesn't own the building, just the flea market business - brought in some pizza around 2 p.m. to draw the vendors out of their cars.

Around a weathered plywood table, they talked about what comes next.

Barry said she won't reopen at the boulevard location near Town Center, which has housed Bill's for about a dozen years.

She's putting out a plea for a 25,000- to 33,000-square-foot building and a landlord willing to work with her while she gets back on her feet.

"I have never begged before," Barry said. "But now, I'm begging."

The profit margins on a used DVD or pair of slacks, bought and resold, are not large. It's enough to get by for the vendors, many of whom make this their full-time job. It doesn't bring in enough to set much aside.

"They need this to survive and pay the bills," Barry said. "I have no income now, either."

Insurance companies wouldn't sell insurance to the vendors, Barry said. Some, such as Fatima Colson, lost thousands of dollars in inventory.

Colson said she saw the smoke as she drove east on Virginia Beach Boulevard on Monday, a small plume at first. "Maybe it's from the doughnut shop," she thought.

As she got closer, her thoughts turned to: "Please, don't let it be Bill's."

The fire, which started in the adjacent Allied Technology Group building about 11:30 a.m. Monday after a light ignited some pallets, burned for more than 12 hours. It left 6 inches of water on the floor in Bill's, and smoke damage throughout.

Bill's has moved a couple of times before in its 20-plus-year history, back when "Old Bill" Barry ran the place, before it moved into the former FX building - a circa-1980s electronics store that was as short-lived as it was ambitious.

Robin Barry said she was just getting ready to put up a sign declaring her new business name: "Beach Flea Market." She laments the timing and circumstances but said she won't miss the porous old building.

On Saturday, Barry said, there will be a flea market outside the building - a "We Survived the Fire Sale." Later, when they recover their stuff, will come the real "Fire Sale."

"You might as well take advantage of the situation," said Dan O'Leary, who sells car-window stickers, which he and his wife turned to after the bullish Beanie Babies market turned bearish.

Barry doesn't know when she and the other vendors will be allowed back inside. A roof beam has to be repaired first.

"Most of our stuff is ruined," she said. "There's not a whole lot here to be saved."

turn bills flea market into a skate park.

me and all my friends were thinking about turning bills flea market into a skate park. but we said its not worth it because the citys goin to tear it down anyways. so we were thinking about starting a patition or a fund raiser to turn bills flea market into an indoor skate park. if we were to do that then we would get alot of kids off the streets and doing something good and energetic. also it could be a big tourist attraction and we could charger people three dollars to get in for the whole day.

What now...

I would be psyched if they did put a new Super Walmart in this location as I live close too and it's really a hike to get to the other ones in the city. I was wondering about the people who had shops there though. Maybe they could launch a huge consignment shop together? That would be pretty cool, and could be done without the walls and scary, dark hallways of Bill's... Plus, they could get sufficient insurance in case they have any more unpredicted events like this one.

"Upscale Super walmart"

Kind of like "Military Intelligence" - no such thing. I seriously doubt the city would put a Wal-Mart on what will ultimately become Town Center West. Expect more upscale shops and restaurants that will blend nicely with the existing center.

Oh, and Wal-Mart is not animal friendly. Shop Target instead.

I hope they rebuild somewhere

I loved going into the flea market there. It felt like I had traveled across the world to Tehran or something. So much bartering, bizarre hand-made stuff for sell, people selling questionable goods, etc. I was thrilled that in this day of excessive regulation places like that could thrive.

Also, it gave people a sense of ownership they would not easily be able to find elsewhere. Setting up a traditional storefront requires an investment well into the thousands of dollars, where renting and customizing a little 6'x6' spot at Bill's cost a tenth of that.

I'm sad to see it go, and I fear the VB city council is circling like vultures, ready for some grossly unprofitable private-public venture that no one needs.

The big rumor in 2007 was that Walmart was going to buy the former F/X building and build a two-story upscale SuperWalmart there. As a Walmart shopper that lives in walking distance, I was estatic.

That's one of the first things I thought of Monday: Walmart can probably buy the site on the cheap now.

These is Not Reality TV--This is Thier Lives

There is a fire. A bad one. Some say the worst of it's kind in living memory for our community. People have lost their livelihoods. Many have had their entire net worth, their life savings they invested in their inventory destroyed. Some of our neighbors walk among us today disheartened wondering how they are going to provide their families. And so many posting here have no compassion for them. If only someone would have thought to have named the fire KATRINA.

Towne Center

I can't be sure whether a developer should move in on what's left of the flea market or not. Don't forget, right across the street is the old HQ which hasn't been touched in YEARS !!!!!!

too bad

I liked Bill's. I had that old feeling of a building with 9 lives going through various transformations while people tried to sort out the right use for it. Didn't know it was an electronics store though; sort of imagined it'd be an old roller skating rink or even one of those groceries stores back when stores like SuperValu were big. It's too bad, hopefully they'll find somewhere else to house Bill's.

It was scheduled to go away...

I'd have to look for the comment over on Urban Planet, but it sounded like in a year or two the F/X building was going to go away to make room for something else? The article said 1 beam needs to be fixed and the building will be habitable again? I mean, it's just a big metal box.

Hopefully

Well I'd argue against the Bill's Flea Market being a prime location for a developer but I do hope that the owners of the old HQ, that still sits empty after all these years, or the owners of the the Gateway computer store, that still sits empty after all these years, opens up there location so the vendors from Bill's can again support their families.
