Video: Hear what some residents think about 'Bad Ass Coffee.'

The Bad Ass Coffee logo - with donkey.

CHESAPEAKE

The ass looks a little like Winnie the Pooh's friend Eeyore, but he's more bad than blasé - and he hauls heavy loads of coffee.

Bad Ass Coffee - the store with a donkey for a logo - is causing a bit of a stir even though it hasn't opened yet.

"I just think it's inappropriate," said Chris Stallings. The Chesapeake man said he first spotted the shop in Great Bridge with his 10- and 13-year-old sons.

But Bad Ass Coffee - which has dozens of franchises across the country, including one in Virginia Beach - isn't breaking any laws.

After receiving numerous complaints, the city checked in with the commonwealth's attorney, said Blair Barbieri, public communications coordinator for Chesapeake.

The name isn't obscene, she said.

After seeing the sign, Stallings said, he turned his car around to make sure they'd read it right. What, he wonders, if his kids go to school and repeat it?

"I'm not saying they've never heard that language," he said. "It's wonderful to live in America and we're protected by the First Amendment. But I can't walk down the street and say anything I want."

It's not the first time Bad Ass Coffee has whipped up some controversy. The opening of franchises in Surprise, Ariz., and Naples, Fla., got some people riled up, according to news reports.

Situated in Cedar Lakes Center near a sushi place and a nail salon and not far from city hall and a primary school, the Chesapeake shop is still under construction.

Owner Donna Merson said she's hoping for a May opening. Intrigued by the name while on a vacation, she and husband Ronald visited their first Bad Ass Coffee in Florida.

"We loved the product and we loved the atmosphere," she said.

The company was named for the braying donkeys that hauled coffee down mountains in Kona, Hawaii - a story that is displayed in the shops and printed on coffee cups.

"They made a lot of noise, so they were nicknamed the Bad Ass Ones," Merson said.

The company also concedes on its Web site that the "name alone is eye-catching and a real attention-getter."

Nick Amoss, superintendent for the company working on the project, said he isn't surprised some folks are taking issue.

"Out here, I knew they would. It's so conservative," he said. "It doesn't bother me. It's a pretty nice name. It draws a lot of attention."

Virginia Beach Bad Ass Coffee owner M. Elliott points out the donkey story to those who have a problem with the name. Then she tells them the word "ass" is in the Bible.

"People that understand it don't judge it," Elliott said.

No Problem

Folks in favor of the BAC sign. Don't sweat it. The sign will stay. As long as they don't put a cross or In God We Trust sign, there shouldn't be any problems.

wow....

never once did i promote anarchy, but you would think from the responses i have gotten that i am advocating young people to round up those over 40 and drive them back from the Oceanfront. my main point was that while controlling the "thugs" at the Oceanfront, the city has come across as a police state to some people who AREN'T going down there to start any problems, therefor turning them away. a fine example would be the fact that Town Center and Granby Street are usually filled on Friday and Saturday nights with the kinds of people who normally would have gone to the Strip. and the "we just have to deal with it mentality" is not something some of us can fathom. if we all just "deal with it", eventually your government is going to start making other, more unpleasant changes that you will just have to "deal with". i'm not saying "anything goes in the streets", if you had actually read my post, i advocated social change through responsible actions like VOTING, not going out and cursing at cops on the Strip. its exactly that sort of misinterpretation that causes problems between the generations. i post something mature and responsible, and all you hear is "take it to the streets". but

mmh...mmh...mmh!

"You have to take care of small problems before they become big problems."

Thank you! That's EXACTLY what a lot of people are trying to do about this seemingly harmless three letter word. And, by the way, it's not just a handful of people who find the name in poor taste...it's only a handful of people who feel the importance of speaking up. This is a Bible belt area, if you haven't noticed.

Funny how the same people who have no objection to the name get so ticked off when people express opposed views. This forum is for the opinions of all, and I for one find it very rude to tell one to "get over it". There's nothing to "get over".

To lindowitz

What makes you think that the 'anything goes' crowd that you want to take over things will make things better, unless you think 'doing it in the street' is better?

Much ado about nothing?

Get over it. People speak this way. If you are offended, lock yourself in your house so you don't have to see or hear the rest of the mean old world and leave the rest of us alone. If you don't like Bad Ass Coffee, go to Starbucks. As far as one person's comment on the cops on the oceanfront, you need to get a clue. There is a big difference between permitting the name of a business that makes reference to a "naughty" word, and allowing thugs to take over the oceanfront with an "anything goes" attitude, and let them drive away all the tourists. VB made their minds up years ago that tourist dollars were more important than locals, and we all get to deal with it. Allowing miscreants to ruin the place for everybody would be stupid, and I'm glad they're doing something about it. Like all things with the government, we need to be mindful that it is not carried too far, like the objections of a few over BAC. Too far the other way is worse. You have to take care of small problems before they become big problems.

Freedom

Many members of this group act as though a clan of raving maniacs rushed the BA Coffee shop with Bibles, pitchforks and torches. They simply offered thier opinions requested by the media.

Starbucks, a rival coffee shop, ride on BA's free publicity as an alternative to BA.

Meanwhile, those who wish to sample what may be great coffee, feel they must refrain based on personal beliefs. This isn't a decision they select as a boycott.

That other swear words exposed to children are "worse" has no relativity to the word they avoid; most originate from the Bible based on rebelion.

Freedom does not mean respect, as clearly displayed in this thread. Freedom means Americans will not be held responsible by the government to express their own individuality.

capitalism

Hey Willy Brown - I'm with you; competition is good for consumers. If we can get an "I prefer dick's" and a Hooters in the same shopping center, with a Bad Ass Coffee in between for good measure, we might get cheaper wings AND coffee without the threat of someone's daddy telling us we're inappropriate ;)

A name

In Jacksonville, Florida they have Dick’s Wings a chicken wings restaurant. They sell a T-shirt there that says ‘I prefer Dick’s to Hooter’s. Let’s get a Dick’s Wings up here in beautiful Chesapeake and put it right next to the Hooters. Now that would be fun!

love coffee

I cant believe how "up in arms" everyone is over the name of a coffee shop. Most of you are right on, did anyone ever take a look at "Dirty Dicks". It has been in the area for a while and I have never heard about that. And the other person who posted about the city having people under 40 with incomes, I so do agree with you but as a person over 40 I still agree with you. The mayor and her hinchmen are so worried about what happens at the beach I think they loose sight of the rest of the city. Please govern like we want you to when we all voted you into office. Oh and I do LOVE my coffee........

Seriously people

It's a chain from Hawaii. Donkeys (aka Asses) haul coffee beans therefore the chain is named Bad Ass Coffee. I'm constantly amazed at how sheltered and conservative Hampton Roads is. It's not capitalizing on misuse of any word or using "shocking marketing" tactics. Way to beat a dead ass to death...

If you're going to complain about Bad Ass Coffee...

At least complain that their coffee sucks. Who cares about the name.

the "good" reverand and "bad ass" coffee

Just ignore Rev. Spitz, assuming the child abuse post was written by the real Donald Spitz. He's the leader of some extremist religious website and organization. Google him if you want to see it; I'm not giving him free advertising. Let's just say the site has headlines such as "United Way is Evil," "Birth Control is Evil," and my personal favorite, "Sadistic Killer Lesbians Shared Blood Lust". Just do what I do and pretend everything he says is sarcastic. It's way easier to read his stuff that way.

Bad Ass Coffee

I needed the chuckle this article gave me. Come on....get real.... There's more important things to be worried about. Can't wait for the grand opening! I love me a good cup of bad ass coffee!!

What about.....

What about Dirty Dicks Crab House??????? Maybe the Rev. should take his soap box over to that business and complain about their name as well!

i already previously posted, but i'm wondering..

why do we seem to have so many reaistic, bright, in-touch with reality adults posting on here, yet we seem to have the same old "fogies", for lack of a better word, in office???

this area is only going to change when someone UNDER the age of...probably 40 in this area, steps up and runs for office. you CAN attract the 18-35 crowd to VB, they happen to have some disposable income these days. so here are some helpful pointers:

1. back off of the "police state mentality". censorship does serve a purpose, i agree, but we still have the 1st amendment. the leaders of VA need to balance that just a tad bit bettter(or at least slap a pastie on the woman on the state seal)

2. by backing off the police state mentality some, you can put police where they are more needed......150 cops on horses and bicycles at the strip to write obscenity tickets and loud stereo tickets is incredibly irreponsible fiscally. why not....stop shootings, robberies, DUIs, red light runners, and other violent crimes in...get this....the neighborhoods WEST of the ocaeanfront. (Yes Ms. Obendorf, between the Norfolk line and First Colonial belongs to you too.)

Back when we actually had morals.....

If I would have sipped my Dad's coffee and said "that is some bad ass coffee", I would have most likely woke up laying on the floor halfway across the room. And that was not child abuse either. This is how rules just fall by the wayside, we turn a blind eye, maybe even snicker, and let it go. After a while, it becomes a non-issue. Then another word is allowed to be used out of context and that one will be a little worse, so on and so on. I am not offended by the word "ass", but I too have let too many things get by and continue to allow it to happen. Bottom line here is, I understand the outrage and I can sympathize with these folks opinion. Yes the Bible makes use of the word ass, but it is used to describe a donkey, an ass. "Bad Ass Coffee" is not describing anything, they are capitalizing on the mis-use of the word. Look at all the free advertisement they are getting from it.

Life

Get a life people!

Oh, please!

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the definition of the noun "ass" is:

1. Any of several hoofed mammals of the genus Equus, resembling and closely related to the horses but having a smaller build and longer ears, and including the domesticated donkey.

2. A vain, self-important, silly, or aggressively stupid person.

Ass used in the sense being objected to by silly people such as "Rev." Spitz is "vulgar slang". Doesn't it make a whole lot more sense to explain slang vs proper English to our kids...i.e., educate them as is our responsibility as parents!? I would submit that failure to do so makes one...dare I say it...an ass!

Come on....

This company couldn't pay for better publicity. Arent there bigger issues in the world?

he had to ....

turn his car around and drive back to see if that's what it said????? Sounds like Mr. Stallings was inappropriately subjecting his children to what he felt was inappropriate language. Take his children away, he is not a fit parent to force the tender little tykes to endure such horrendous abuse. I'm sure they will get better care in foster homes. At least there would not be some evil parent that kept driving around the block forcing them to read what he feels is inappropriate language....hey, how about making a big deal about it in front of your kids? sheesh. get. a. life.

Hurray for Beverly Tidball!

Hurray for Ms. Tidball, one of the few people on the video to display intelligence and an understanding of the principles under which this country was founded. I do feel sorry for the parade of buffoons who displayed their ignorance for all to see!

Lighten UP

People in Chesapeake need to get off their high horse and get a life. In case they haven't turned on the TV, your kids are being subjected to much worse stuff then the word "ass." Yes, ass is in the bible. Yes, another word for donkey is "ass." And yes if you look behind you, you'll notice that there is an "ass" following you around 24/7.
In Europe the human body is not referred to as something to be ashamed of. Lighten up for goodness sake!!!
The Bible Belt is making an "ass" of everyone.

Biblical Ass Reference

Armed with a jaw bone of an ass, Samson defeats the Philistines. (a caption under a pretty cool picture.) Only one ass, or part of one anyway. It is one of my favorite asses from the bible.

Anything for publicity

After reading about this whole thing, I wonder if Mr Stallings might have ownership interest in Bad Ass Coffee - because he's surely getting that establishment a lot of free publicity!

I may have to try a cup of their product. It'll help me wash down my Helluva Good cheese.

offended

He was so offended, and worried about the exposure of bad language on his children, that he turned his car around to make sure they had read the sign corretly.

The Bible and the ass

The Rev. Donald Spitz must not have read his Bible. It contains the very word he seems to have trouble with. Maybe he crossed that word out. I wonder where he studied his theology?

Dealing with it

Gee, Chris, if you’re going to stumble over ‘Bad Ass Coffee’ at the tender ages of 10 and 13, what are you going to do when the subject becomes sex, drugs, honesty, integrity, how to live, who to live with, and how to differentiate right from wrong? You need to be careful of the example you set and possibly you should go to the library and locate some good books on how to raise decent children. I’ll give you a little help to start. Just saying no won’t suffice.

Bad coffee

Simple.Don't patronize the establishment. They don't make money. They close up shop & the sign comes down.I think more people are cutting out the $5 large coffees any ways.Way over priced!

Idiots

Gotta love the geniuses in this article who cry about their kids seeing the word ass. They probably woke up this morning and put the kids on a bus to public school where they've already heard and said 100 words and phrases that would dwarf the word ass in comparison.

Educated people know that a

Educated people know that a donkey is also called an ass..So, maybe the Chesapeake officials should spend more time improving their school system and stop worrying about such petty issues as a donkey on a sign. Check out some of the signs for those "strip clubs"...
