Posted to: Chesapeake News

CHESAPEAKE

An odor that persisted for a week in a room at the Red Roof Inn on Woodlake Drive - and a guest's refusal of housekeeping services - roused the maid's suspicion.

So when the guest went to pay for his room around

9:15 a.m. March 12, the cleaning crew went in. On the floor between the door and the bed lay a body, according to Chesapeake police.

The body was that of the man's elderly wife, who had been dead for about a week and a half, said Christi Golden, police spokeswoman.

Investigators didn't believe the death was suspicious. The medical examiner determined the woman, who was in her 80s, died from natural causes.

Apparently, the couple had been living in hotels for some time, Golden said, and they had been at the Red Roof Inn for several months.

The man cooperat ed with police, and no charges have been filed, Golden said. "He didn't want to part with her."
