Football: Great Bridge receiver Heastie commits to West Virginia

Posted to: High Schools Sports

Great Bridge wide receiver Logan Heastie, one of the nation's top prospects for the Class of 2009, verbally committed to play at West Virginia on Saturday.

Heastie, 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, chose the Mountaineers over Florida, Boston College, Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Penn State, Alabama and Tennessee.

"I visited all of the schools who offered except for Southern Cal because that's an expensive trip," said Heastie by cell phone as he was driving back from Morgantown. "It was just a great trip. The facilities were great and so are the coaches."

It also helped that former Landstown and Salem coach Chris Beatty is on the coaching staff at West Virginia. Heastie, a first-team All-Tidewater pick last season as a junior, has known Beatty since he was 10 years old.

"That was very important because you want to play for somebody you can trust," he said. "And I can trust him."

Beatty told Heastie that he'd have a chance to come in and play right away.

"That's what all coaches say," said Heastie, who had 58 receptions for 1,067 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. "But they really do need help, so I have a chance."

Heastie wasn't the only player from Hampton Roads to commit to West Virginia. The Mountaineers also got a verbal commitment from Phoebus quarterback Taj Boyd.

"We're really good friends, so I was real happy about that," Heastie said. "It also means I'll have a reliable quarterback there who is going to be able to get it done."

Heastie was recently selected earlier this week to play in ESPN’s second annual Under Armour All-American all-star football game in January.
