A grand jury will hear the cases of Shawn Sir Charles Ward and Julian “Ramel’’ Barksdale, two men charged in a South Norfolk home invasion in which a 1-year-old girl was killed.

A Chesapeake General District Court  judge ruled this afternoon that there was sufficient evidence to send the cases to a grand jury for possible indictments. Ward, 22, and Barksdale, 20, are accused of killing Ny-Asia Tillmon, an infant, and shooting two of the child’s family members.

Ward and Barksdale each faced charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, breaking and entering with intent to murder, three counts of use of a firearm and use of a mask.

During a preliminary hearing, the judge dismissed one count of attempted murder and use of a firearm against each of the two defendants.

The shooting occurred the afternoon of Nov. 10 at an apartment in the 3700 block of Bainbridge Blvd. Police said the infant was shot when three men entered the apartment.

The child’s grandmother and uncle also were shot. According to court records, Ward lived in the 5900 block of College Drive in Suffolk and Barksdale lived in the 3200 block of Dam Neck Road in Virginia Beach. The two men, cousins, are being held in jail. A third suspect in the shooting has not been apprehended, police said.
