The Suffolk Police Officer’s Association will hold a dedication ceremony Saturday for Henley Place, formerly the 100 block of North Wellons Street and the location of police headquarters.

The name change was made by Suffolk City Council in January as a municipal tribute for Officer William “Drew” Henley, who died while on duty in March of 2005.

Henley’s family will be on hand for the 1 p.m. dedication ceremony, said Lt. Debbie George, a police spokeswoman.

Henley suffered a fatal heart attack during a foot pursuit of a suspect in the area of Webb Street at approximately 2330 hours.

He and his partner were on patrol about 11:30 p.m. on March 19, 2005, when they saw several men acting suspiciously along Webb Street.

When the officers approached the men, one of them fled and Henley chased and caught him. Moment after taking the man into custody, however, Henley collapsed. He died shortly after midnight at a local hospital. The cause of death was a heart attack.

The man Henley arrested was wanted in New Jersey on assault and battery charges.

Henley was a Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Suffolk Police Department for three years. He was survived by a wife and four children.
