Students sign up for college prep

Fifty students, including at least 15 from Suffolk, are slated to participate in Paul D. Camp Community College's first Upward Bound summer session.

The college preparation program serves low-income students and those who would be the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree. The U.S. Department of Education awarded Paul D. Camp a five-year grant worth about $1.25 million to start the program.

The college began recruiting freshmen and sophomores from Franklin, Lakeland and Southampton high schools this month. Eighth-grade sign-ups for students at Suffolk's Forest Glen and John F. Kennedy middle schools, as well as middle schools in Franklin and Southampton County, start in April.

Accepted students will meet Monday through Friday from June 23 to Aug. 1 at Paul D. Camp's Franklin campus. They'll study English, math and other content courses. Participants will also learn test-preparation and study skills, visit colleges and universities and take other educational field trips.

The students will continue to attend counseling sessions and writing classes during the school year.
