Training flights at Oceana, Fentress to increase next week

VIRGINIA BEACH

The Navy announced today that flight operations at Oceana Naval Air Station and Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress in Chesapeake will increase considerably March 10-13.

Five squadrons from Oceana and one from Chambers Field in Norfolk are preparing for an upcoming training exercise. The flights will take place during the day and at night.

While I didn't research your recommendation, I will stipulate that high decibel levels could be a factor impairing learning abilities pertaining to speech. Hearing however, is a sense & is granted to most children without having to learn it. I believe they can hear you right from the first day. Interestingly enough , Helen Keller, as a child, learned many things including speech, reading, & writing, without the benefit of hearing or sight. I concur that most folks probably wouldn't feel an air base would be compatible with what they would expect in their neighborhood,& I wonder at the logic of those who purchased their home after the base was in operation. While we do not live in the 18th century, we do live in the same state as Patrick Henry, in a country he helped to create, & 1 of the issues is peace, by definition. Also, I have always liked that speech.

Patrick Henry's world and the one in which we now reside are quite different. No one is saying the Navy shouldn't exist or doesn't add to our National Security. However, a large Naval Air Base with ongoing training flights of high powered jets simply is incompatible with what most folks have come to expect in their neighborhoods. It is also a proven fact (research noise pollution and learning) that children's cognitive ability in learning speech and hearing are seriously compromised by the decibel levels of jet noise.

"Gentlemen may cry, "Peace! Peace!" -- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms!" To any non patriotic, Anti-Navites concerned,...deal with it, "eh???" Deal With It, "huh?" DEAL WITH IT. The US Navy is here & rightfully so. As Naval bases get removed, by one., guess where the last ones standing, flying, or even floating will be? They aren't going anywhere..

produce now. To suggest these homeowners sell and move elsewhere is rather ludicrous, don't you think? Who will buy? Not to mention the flat housing market. This feeling of being "stuck" must only add to the misery. If you have a "I love jet noise" sticker on your car how about sitting in the yard of a home adjacent Oceana and see how long it takes to remove it? Have a little compassion.

Hey, before you lovers of the "sound of freedom" go spewing your hateful nonsense why don't you do some research on the negative effects of noise on the brain? There are many studies, for instance, according to the Franklin Institute, Resources for Science Learning, chronic noise overloads the brain with powerful hormones that has a cumulative effect of damaging and killing brain cells. According to Dr. Alice H. Suter, an audiologist at the Nat'l. Inst. for Occupational Safety and Health: "Included in noise related problems are high blood pressure, peptic ulcers, cardio vascular deaths, strokes, suicides, degradation of the immune sustem , and impairment of learning, noise is also associated with an increase of aggression and a decrease on cooperation." What a silly statement one commentor made about putting up with a few seconds of noise: we are talking about more than seconds! I have heard these plane when shopping (thank god I don't live near the base) and was aghast at the noise level. The City was irresponsible to allow housing so close to the base. While living overseas, I was often in military housing adjacent to an airbase but the noise 30 yrs. ago was nothing like what the

Oceana Blvd. & jets

I live in California and was raised in Va. Beach. I have heard that they are offering home owners top$ to sell their homes so they can bulldoze them. Is this true? Need some info on this due to my aging father that resides on N. Oceana Blvd.

think about all the maintainers-the mechanics, the fuels guys, the ordinance techs, that are still on the line, working to keep these jets in the air, working 12 hour days 6 days a week to keep mission profiles on track.
They are not home watching "Lost", or reasing their children bedtime stories...

Are you actually complaining about noise that lastes for maybe 30 seconds at the most. So while you are sitting at home, watching American Idol and being brainwashed by the vast amount of junk on television, you may have to turn your TV up for a few seconds to hear Simon say the same insulting remarks to a poor sap who knew they couldnt sing and just wanted to get on TV anyway. Find something better to complain about then the noise MY Navy makes training to protect you so you can sit and be lazy and watch nonsense on TV all day.

Yes WVU, agreed. NAS Oceana was commissioned in 1943.....I'd like to assume that those who are irritated by jet noise purchased their home before then....but probably not. I'd like to think that I would research an area before I spent hundreds of thousands to move there, but thats just me I guess. Lets just say I have better things to complain about, like the neighborhood dog when he leaves a present in my yard.

PS. If you don't like trains, don't live near the track.

Oceana/Fentress

I too live near Fentress. So the tv/radio need to be turned up sometimes when the jets fly, so what?! I'm with all the people who say "they were here first". NOBODY complained about the jet noise on 9/11. To Mr. Fabulous ... maybe you can ask the terrorists not to bomb us during your important tv show of the week!
