The Virginia Stage Company opens its latest production, "Hank Williams: Lost Highway" this week, with a preview show at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Before the official opening night for this musical biography of the great country music star, at 8 p.m. Friday, there will be preview shows at the Wells Theatre in Norfolk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Those preview shows are $9. The other shows Friday through April 20 are $37-$42. Tickets can be purchased by calling (757) 671-8100.
And as the Stage Company gets ready for the final production of its season, Virginia Musical Theatre is announcing its next season.
For its second year in its new home at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach and with the new title of Broadway at the Center, the theater group will open with "Elton John's Aida" on Oct. 23-26.The Tony Award-winning epic follows three people forced to make choices that will change their lives and alter the course of history.
"White Christmas" will make a return on Dec. 4-7. With seven sold out performances during this current season, the musical ensured its return engagement. The show is woven together by ten Irving Berlin songs including "Count Your Blessings," "I Love A Piano," "Happy Holidays" and the title song.
Play Feb. 5-8, 2009, will be "Ballroom." In this musical, which features, naturally, ballroom dancing, a widow learns to love again as she turns to dancing as a social outlet.
"West Side Story" will be performed March 19-22. This classic, with an award-winning score by Leonard Bernstein, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It includes standards such as "Tonight," "Somewhere" and "Maria."
The season will close with "Hairspray," April 30-May 3. Billed as Broadway’s big, fat hit, this follows the journey of a teen with big hair who becomes a celebrity through a local TV music program in 1962.
